Default The Cowboys starring Jon Wayne

Hey I just order The Cowboys on Amazon and I was just wondering how is the picture quality? Is it as good as The Searchers?

It isn't quite as good PQ as The Searchers (very high standard for older films) but it still looked damn good to me. I think there is a good chance you'll be pleased.

Sorry for bumping up an old thread, but could not find any other specifically related to this film. Finally got around to watching this blu the other night. I was at a theme park during the day, and the park had a western shootout show. At the start of it, they played the music from The Cowboys, which got me wanting to see the film when I returned home. A couple of thoughts on one of Duke's last great films:

- The image was very sharp. A great transfer in my opinion.
- The soundtrack was good, but not great. I agree with this forum's review, stating it was a little on the subdued side. Still very acceptable.
- The extras were great, especially the round-table discussion of the actors and director some 35 years later.
- No need to reiterate how good Duke was in this role. When he had the right story and direction, there was no one better in the business.
- Bruce Dern was an amazing actor, to make the audience truly despise his character
- Roscoe Lee Brown was an inspired selection for the cattle drive's cook. Perfect balance against Duke's tough-as-nails lead

All in all, I'd give this film my highest rating. Beyond the wonderful vistas captured on film, the human element of what keeps these men and boys tied together is never lost.

Highly underrated film. IMO this film holds up better then the searchers. It has a more modern spin on the old west.

Recently watched The Cowboys for the first time. I'm not typically a John Wayne fan, but this was an incredible film. Good story, great acting (especially considering that many of the actors were kids), and extremely impressive scenery.

This is definitely my favorite JW film - he was excellent here. I believe this was one of his last movies before he passed.

BD did a great job of playing the evil bad guy, and the other supporting actors/actresses were good as well - especially CD, who played the "madam" of a travelling "house of ill repute" - LOL.

Some of my favorite scenes in the film:

[Show spoiler]- When JW beat up the BD character, but stopped short of killing him (even though he could have) - only to be "rewarded" for his mercy by having BD shoot him in the back multiple times - what a scum-bag.

- When the surviving kids - with the help of the cook - put together a plan in which they ambushed all of the evil cowboys (led by BD) and got back the herd of cattle. One of the last scenes with BD being dragged away by his horse (to his almost certain death) was very fitting for the character.

It's been a while since anyone has left a message on THE COWBOYS (1972) thread. One of my favorite Western genre movies, one of the finest performances of John Wayne and the John Williams film score has definitely stood the test of time. 2022 will mark its 50th Anniversary. I surely hope Warners release a 50th Anniversary Archive Edition on 4K UHD. The movie itself and quality of source material is surely worth it.

Saw Dern on a talk show once. He talked about receiving hate mail for years after the movie was released.

I have heard (and loved) John Williams' "Overture from The Cowboys" ever since I bought the "By Request..." CD by Maestro Williams and the Boston Pops Orchestra, but I've only watched the source film once, and that was on TV many years ago.

I just ordered the Blu-ray (starting out 2022 with one Amazon purchase), and I'll probably get it on Tuesday. I read Martin Liebman's review carefully, and though I realize the quality might not be five-star worthy, I think the $9.99 Amazon is asking for it s a good price.

Jon Wayne is John's evil twin.

Keep up!
