Default Sony says PS4 To PS5 Game Upgrades Is Down To Publisher Support

Sony Interactive Entertainment has revealed that the PS4 to PS5 game upgrades feature will ultimately come down to publisher support. One example of this is Madden NFL 21, which EA has confirmed will allow users to upgrade from current-generation to new consoles.

A new statement issued to Japanese publication GameSpark confirms that Sony is leaving decisions up to the publishers in regards to allowing users to freely upgrade from PS4 to PS5. You can view a translation of the article below:

Quote:
Apparently the update program for PS4>PS5 software copies will be done at the publisher's own discretion, but SIE stated that they will flexibly support these upgrades even in Japan as well
(note that it's still unknown whether they deal with PS4>PS5DE)

Sony can hardly force 3rd parties to make this available, but I would imagine current games are likely to get that support as it helps sell those games on PS5, even if there aren't any big changes other than load times.

Hopefully most games will be playable on PS5 even without any upgrades if the developer is gone or doesn't want to bother with their old PS4 games. There's some potential profit digitally if gamers see an old game has been enhanced for PS5. For discs though, they wouldn't make a dime since those games are already bought on disc. The upgrades for each game though, should be free as expected.

It seems like this game was developed for the PS4, but I wonder if Sucker Punch could easily upgrade the development of it to a PS5 game with PS5 graphics and effects, not just a PS4 boost on PS5? I'm going to wait and see while saving for PS5 games after getting the console. That's going to be expensive enough and I save for PS5 versions.

Shouldn't this go without saying though? I had already assumed this. Damn, Sony's messaging on BC is so confusing! First it's the "top 100 titles" message from Mark Cerny. Then Sony came out and said they are testing over 4000 titles. Then they come out and say "anything released starting this July on PS4 must also work on PS5." Like, really? Does that REALLY have to be stated? Shit man! It should be a foregone conclusion that not only will these games "work" on PS5 but they will look and run their best on PS5! Why can't they just say that?? Why can't they be more definitive in their messaging and say "PS5 is backwards compatible with PS4" and be done with it? Did Sony not prepare PS5 to run PS4 games from the get go? At least that's what I thought Cerny said in his briefing.

Honestly, Sony are so bad at communicating their stuff so far.

Why not just come out and follow the Smart Delivery method MS laid out because you've only got a minority of 1st party titles there. Everything will be exclusive. They're genuinely being dumb about this whole thing imo.

It is literally the dumbest, most confusing messaging I've ever seen from them.

Sony's first party stuff once Ghost is out is practically all PS5 exclusive from then on anyway.

Sony has also told developers that any new PS4 games submitted for certification after July 13 will have to be PS5-compatible.

Developer documentation released on a PlayStation internal partner website states that first-party developers submitting games past this date must ensure that the game will also run on the PS5.

So I guess it's been made pretty clear internally at least.

That's literally the most pathetic excuse Sony or any other major corporation could be using. If that was the case, why does MS manage to somehow not confuse people for what they've been saying?

Thank you!

Look I'm as big a PlayStation homer as you'll find but I have to call a spade a spade! Sony's handling of BC information for PS5 has been a complete clusterf_,ck! How can they come off so unprepared?? They should've been prepping for this ever since 2013. The messaging should be so simple. "Buy a PS5 and bring your entire PS4 library over with you." Why can't it be that simple??

A part of me actually understands what they tried to do, but it was botched. I think they wanted to set expectations on PS5 running PS4 games at boosted performance with the extra horsepower of the PS5 but use downclocks and whatnot where there's stability issues. The PS4 Pro actually did this when they introduced Boost Mode with a disclaimer about possible performance hitches etc.

My curiosity however is with the MS version of BC for X1 titles which apparently MS has managed to assure will be run at full boosted performance of Series X. Possibly without patches being needed.

It’s a bit more complicated in Sony’s shoes.

I do agree they could be more transparent about it though.

If a current gen game gets an update, cool. If not, well at least I’ll still be able to play it on PS5 if I so choose to do so.

Isn’t EA’s digital event in like an hour or so?

Guess I’ll watch these greedy bastards.

Edit

Tomorrow is EA. Oops

In what way? I don't see why Sony couldn't have taken the exact same path to BC as MS has. Why is it more complicated for Sony than it was for MS? There are literally PC emulators right now that "Joe-Shmoes" developed that run PS1, PS2, and several PS3 titles. Don't give me the whole "It's more complicated for Sony" bullshit.

Simple

They are not trying to sell or market PS4 in PS5’s launch window. They want the focus to be around their next-gen console, & their next-gen only games.

You can disagree with that strategy, but that’s the path they’ve decided to go with.
