Seth Rogen Comedy ‘An American Pickle’ Jumps From Sony To HBO Max

Deadline has confirmed that the Seth Rogen/Point Grey Pictures comedy An American Pickle is heading to HBO Max. I’m informed that a release date for the movie is still TBD even though the service is launching on May 27.

WarnerMedia has taken global rights to the feature which stars Rogen in dual roles from Sony. The Culver City studio was set to open the feature later this year, but they’ve moved a large number of pics on their feature slate to 2021 (only three theatrical titles remain for Sony this year: Monster Hunter, Connected, and Happiest Season). In the wake of exhibition’s shutdown out of safety for COVID-19, a number of smaller-mid sized films are segueing to streaming with theatrical distributors selling them off, i.e. STX’s My Spy to Amazon, and Paramount/MRC’s Lovebirds to Netflix.

Pic is a feature adaptation of the 2013 New Yorker series Sell Out by Simon Rich, who also wrote the script and executive produced with Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Point Grey execs Alex McAtee and Ted Gidlow. Brandon Trost directs.

Americna PIckle follows an immigrant worker at a pickle factory (played by Rogen) who is accidentally preserved for 100 years and wakes up in modern day Brooklyn. He learns his only surviving relative is his great grandson (also portrayed by Rogen), a computer coder who he can’t connect with.

The first half is fantastic about gentrification, forgotten ancestors, and possibly family connections. The second is a complete opposite tangent about revenge, hatrid, and bitterness.

Tried to get through this and couldn't. I hate those kinds of films. Some movies can meld together comedy and drama (The Coens are good at this), others though are just depressing and almost seem to contrive laughs in trailers through clever editing and taking the scenes out of context. The Men Who Stare At Goats and The Descendants springs to mind here.

47mins in and yikes, what a trainwreck. Somehow this is a "comedy", but it failed to make me laugh because the jokes are of the level of Big Bang Theory.

It also doesn't help that it's Seth Rogen talking to himself throughout the entire movie. I guess they didn't want to hire another actor for the role.

On the bright side, he didn't smoke weed as he usually does for his characters, although it doesn't mean much 'cause the movie is just about watchable, imo. I really thought this looked promising, but nope, another Rogen disappointment.

Agree. 7/10

The first half is stronger, but I still liked the second half. It's also one of Rogen's best performances.

Also I totally relate to Rogan's character as well since he is a struggling freelance web developer like myself.

I can see that.

It's also also kind of refreshing to see a more mature, and restrained movie and performance, that isn't filled with sex jokes, swearing and weed jokes.

This film made me laugh quite a bit.
