I'm playing Good Will Hunting on DVD in my PS3 right now, and the screen is....strange. The aspect ratio is 1.85:1, but for some reason the image is smaller and there are black bars on all sides. It's like it's playing on a smaller TV, and I have no idea how to fix it so it takes up the entire screen like it should. This is the first DVD this has ever happened with, does anybody know what I can do to fix it?

I had that problem with the original release of Office Space. It would work fine with my regular DVD player (when I had it), but I found it to be a problem with the upconversion. When I changed the upconversion settings the picture would stretch horizontally, but the bars on top and bottom would still be there. I have mine connected through a Denon receiver, but have not tried the PS3 connected directly to the TV.
I have Good Will Hunting, too, is your copy some type of special edition? I can try my copy, too, and see what happens. |

I just checked my Good Will Hunting copy, and got the same thing. Setting upscale to full just stretches the picture horizontally, the top and bottom bars remain. I remember this happening with a few other dvds, like the first release of The Boondock Saints.
If your TV has a feature which lets you choose the aspect ratio (usually w/ options like normal, zoom, wide-zoom, etc.) try zoom, it may work correctly then. My TV won't do that w/ HDMI material. Oh well, looks like I'll have to wait for some BDs, but then I'll have reason to rebuy! |

Yeah...my TV doesn't allow you to do those picture changing techniques like zoom, etc. when using HDMI.
That's a real son of a ***** though, I will definitely be buying this movie and any others I encounter that are like that when they're released in HD. Thanks for all your help guys. |

Sounds like you bought the same DVD of Good Will hunting my Mom recently bought. That one wasn't anamorphic - really disappointing - so the picture came out small on my 52" XBR in a similar fashion to what you're describing. I only gave it a brief try to make sure it worked and didn't use any zoom settings since my Mom has an SD set anyway.
Did you try the zoom functions on both the PS3 and your TV? When I play standard-def MP4s on my PS3 I just hit triangle and utilize the zoom function to enlarge the picture. Not sure if that works for DVDs though since I almost never use my PS3 for DVD playback (have a Sony upconverter for that) and the few times I did they were anamorphic discs. Unfortunately I'm not at home and can't check. |
