I don't think it was technically necessary but I think it was brilliantly bizarre. I voted "brilliant" only because I never laughed harder at any horror film. The entire ending, final 25+ minutes is an absolute riot.

I do think it has a very, very odd final note of: Screw Science / Medicine, Religion/Faith is Right Always. Which at the time was a pretty dangerous message. (Still is.) Which also was my big I Dunno Guys with Nightmare on Elm Street 3.

That's a pretty good summary of how I feel too.

It's a shame, as I like Richard Burton but the story is dreadful. It borders on pretentious but I voted it as a mess. It's hardly a coherent film and undoes everything the first achieved, which is what you get when the director hated the original film.

I try to forget this ones exists (plus the prequels) and that it's just the classic first one and the criminally underrated third film Legion.

I don't like any of those options. To me The Heretic was an interesting film, but it just doesn't connect well with the first film. Sequels either hinge on making the same film over again except bigger, while others go completely off the path making a movie that resembles nothing from it's predecessor. A sequel should have its own story, but be faithful to the world of it's predecessor. Exorcist 2 was made to be so different from the first film, that it feels like it isn't even set in the same world and continuity of the first film.

If it was its own thing and not a sequel to Exorcist, then it'd be looked at with intrigue and admiration for its ethereal vision. Alas it missed the mark on recognizing what made the first film great.

Went for 'different in a good way'. Instead of rehashing the first film, it goes down its own paths. I'm not going to say that it's better than The Exorcist, but I find it more interesting.
