That would suck. There are still plenty of titles, from classic to obscure and everything in between, not on disc, or still DVD only.

Well I think we all just better prepare ourselves for that. At this late date I don't think there is anyway that all these catalog titles that have not been released will ever make their way to HD disc.

Hmmm.
I have most of what I'd like - maybe 175 out of my Top 200. But my favourite film A Matter of Life and Death has a sub-standard Blu-ray Disc release, and will hopefully soon be getting a full 4k restoration. Can we wait until that's out? Then I'm happy. Steve W |

I am not sure I agree. I think that the DVD to BD ratio on sales is like 60/40% in the US market. I bet that closely matches the TVs that are 50 inch displays and over. If the movie studios don't want their product to end up like the music industry (and I am sure they don't), then they will push for physical media. I do think that from here on, many of the deeper catalog titles will come from third party distributors like Criterion, Twilight Time, etc. and with more limited availability, but there will still be many titled released by major studios. Obviously, there will be the typical re-releases. The new Ultra HD disc will help keep things going, but that will be for people with 60 inch displays and higher and probably with the same market as BD3D. I can think of tons of films that need to be released. For me, my collection will not be complete without 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Mister Roberts, His Girl Friday, and the core Hammer films released in region A. But even once all of the catalog films do come out to my satisfaction, the studios would be fools to abandon physical media. Once we have space travel, flying cars, and virtual reality, there will still be hard drives that fail and pirated files.

Actually... I'd be ok with it. There's really nothing I have on DVD that I'd re-buy (except some tv shows like seasons 1-4 of The Office and anything else that'd benefit from HD, but I know it's never going to happen) other than Aladdin which is already announced.

Blu-ray is by far my most popular method to experience new catalog films. I don't really have a list of films that I want on Blu-ray (outside a few essential titles), rather, when a new catalog film is released or announced and I like the sound of it, I add it to my buy list. So I'd never be content, as there's always something else I'm going to want on Blu-ray. Basically, every film I would enjoy, I want on Blu-ray (and that number is easily going to be5 digits).
If Blu-ray catalog releasing ended today it'd probably spell the end of any further exploration into my cinephilia. I don't have any rep cinemas near me, there's bugger all on TV, and I'm waay too far down the PQ rabbit hole to go back to DVD (or even worse, streaming). Luckily, Blu-ray is far from dead. I think we'll still be seeing plenty of stuff from the boutique labels like Criterion for a very very long time yet (another 10-20 years wouldn't surprise me). |

Yeah, but that's primarily going to be new releases or very popular films from the last decade. I'm sure I've seen a stat for the UK saying that catalog home video is bigger on BD now than it is on DVD. And Criterion themselves have said their Blu-rays outsell DVD 60:40.

The only wildcard would be what happens to Warner library. I'm already annoyed with Warner's lagging output, and as they control the most titles (with almost no licencing) it would be devastating if they just stopped. In either case, obviously not everything will make blu ray. But there is hope for a few good years still. But I do see a possibility studios become exclusively interested in UHD and streaming, meaning they will re-release some of the same titles, and ignore stuff like Gangsters, noirs, monsters from the 1930's and 1940's that we still want to see hit blu ray. There were a few "collections" of those types of films on DVD, and the only hope on bly ray might be if the niche labels get interested in doing more 5+ film collections. It doesn't seem the studios are going to do many more of these, and when they do its half-assed like the Frank Sinatra collection. |

I'd be unhappy. I still have many DVDs that I'd like to upgrade. I will never pay for streaming. Ever. Are you listening studios? Never. Ever.
