South Korea Wong Kar-Wai 4K UHD Collection

Novamedia just announced a Wong Kar-Wai collection via Facebook:

“We're giving you a short notice because many of you must be curious about what's coming up next. Some of you have already heard from the news articles, but director Wong Karwai's works will be made into 4K UHD, and recently Nova Media has completed a contract to print home videos. <Chungking Express, 1994>, <In The Mood For Love, 2000>, <Happy Together, 1997> and other works will be released in 4K UHD. And other titles that are out of print or released long time ago will be newly packaged and released. We'll give you a detailed production and launch schedule as time goes by. We are informing you this because we expect many of our customers are waiting for the news.”

UPDATE: They confirmed that 2046 will be included.

Nova have not confirmed packaging or any other release details.

Update 28 March 2021:
It appears there will be no 4K discs released for these titles by Novamedia. They have reviewed both UHD and Blu-ray and have determined there isn’t a negligible difference and have only decided to issue standard Blu-Ray editions.

Is there a chance of English subs? Or is it the impossible dream?

"There's 4K Blu-rays, but, that's, uh, just a very small niche market. People keep wanting us to put out 4K Blu-rays, and we're ready to do it, but, for a lot of people, HD looks really good. And that jump isn't quite there yet for everybody."
I doubt they'll care much here.

They confirmed 2046 will be in it replying to a question.

They said there are a lot of details to be sorted out, but typically Nova Media has included English subs on all of their releases. Also that they used English in the announcement is a good sign.

Oh my word...... Depending on what is included in the Criterion set, I may be triple dipping (or quadruple dipping) on some titles. Welp, he's my favorite director.

Is there any indication that this would more likely be a boxset, rather than individual releases? What are the the chances that it will be limited edition / hard to get a copy if not ordered in this first week?

They said further announcements will be coming on packaging.
Fingers are crossed for a nice set.

Probably shouldn’t have put boxset in the thread title until we get more information.

On top of that, imagine if it's limited to 1000 sets, then sells out. No standard edition. No Criterion 4k. Only 1000 sets of these legendary films on 4k UHD. The prices on ebay could potentially reach 4 digits........ That's only a worse case scenario, haha.

im thinking the price if its a box set will be anywhere from $200 to $300, give or take before shipping

The way I am reading it after looking at it again makes it seem like they will just have individual titles not a boxset. This is the section that made me rethink the boxset "We'll give you a detailed production and launch schedule as time goes by"

I'm guessing actually much better chance of English subs for a Korean release/s than there would be for a European one?

As said that doesn't automatically sound like a box and it gives the impression the rarer stuff will just be re released rather than released in UHD.

what would be nice if they had a bundle and when you bought it, you got a limited edition shelf or box or both to go along with it

This is so annoying. Of course it's not there for everybody - it's never gonna be. If they're waiting for everybody then they're never gonna make the jump. Meanwhile, every other major player (and some minor players!) has already taken the plunge.

I'm leaning towards thinking it's individual releases. A 4k box set sounds really hefty in price and in the amount of effort it takes to put together. I think they'd make more money off of individual releases anyway. A set that expensive would be a tough sell for most.

The only thing from the instagram post that suggests to me that it might be a boxset is this line, "Although it is a difficult environment and condition for domestic production, but we are preparing to release UHD package."

Maybe by a "UHD package" they mean a "UHD box set". Time will tell.

This is exciting. Some Wong Kar-Wai's collection were majorly in need of fresh scans like My Blueberry Nights and 2046.

Also, high key hoping we get a hybrid cut of the Grandmaster that meshes all three versions into one film

This is a must have for me. But, I also plan to pick up the Criterion box-set as well.
