Kinda shocked I've never seen this and had no idea Beresford directed it. Will be a blind buy for sure.

I'm still a little surprised that Criterion didn't grab this one, but who knows when they'd have gotten around to releasing it. It's a fantastic addition to Kino's catalog.

And btw, you blind buyers are in for a treat!

• Dual-Layered BD50 Disc

From Bruce Beresford, the acclaimed director of Breaker Morant, Crimes of the Heart and Driving Miss Daisy, and Horton Foote, the legendary writer of To Kill a Mockingbird, Baby the Rain Must Fall and The Trip to Bountiful, comes this classic drama starring screen great Robert Duvall (The Apostle, True Confessions) in his once-in-a-lifetime Oscar-winning Best Actor performance. Mac Sledge (Duvall) is an alcoholic drifter who comes into the life of a lonely widow (Tess Harper, Silkwood) and her young son in the barren flatlands of Texas. But when Mac is revealed to be a once-famous country singer, he must confront a painful past that includes his bitter superstar ex-wife (Betty Buckley, Frantic) and troubled daughter (Ellen Barkin, The Big Easy) while facing an uncertain future that may only be redeemed by the simple power of love. Tender Mercies also won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay (Foote) and was nominated for three more Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director (Beresford). With a stellar supporting cast that includes Wilford Brimley (Country), Lenny von Dohlen (Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me) and Paul Gleason (The Breakfast Club), Tender Mercies is a movie experience of uncommon grace and dignity.

I've been wanting to see this for a pretty long time. Blind buy here, can't wait! I'd prefer that other cover art that's on the region b release but I'll take what I can get.

Always love a good Robert Duvall movie, surprisingly I have never heard of this title, I don't do blind buys so I will have to check this out thru my Netflix BD/dvd subscription, seeing this sure makes me wonder when will "Open Range" finally make it to BD

Same here ... I waited for years and couldn't wait any longer. Great movie. (Or maybe it's Robert Duvall's performance that makes it great).

Robert Duvall won Best Actor at the 56th Academy Awards in 1984. His performance was phenomenal.

As an added bonus, Ellen Barkin is smoking hot in this film.

I am definitely buying this. What a pleasant surprise!

What a wonderful movie. Hearing Robert Duvall singing is a treat. Sadly Wilford Brimley just passed away. My other favorite from Beresford is Black Robe (1991). Came out a year after Dances With Wolves and didn't do well. Different subject from Dances but it is related to the history Native Americans. One brutal movie to watch. I believe it was only released in Germany on Blu-ray. A US release is way past due. Criterion or Kino, hello ?

It's been on blu-ray for years, just in Region B.

What a fantastic blind buy. I often feel Robert Duvall is playing a version of himself but this felt like a completely different person.

Anyone else notice any audio-sync issues? Seemed like around minutes 10-20 the audio was slightly off.

I only just got to watching this disc today, and WOW was the audio sync all over the place. There did seem to be a lot of ADR (audio added in post), which is often not perfect... but still... it actually seemed to "drift", even as I tried to nail it down using my Oppo audio-sync feature. Kinda got frustrating, and I actually gave up. I finally put in the Australian import I've owned for years, and the audio -- even the obvious ADR -- seemed better, with what appeared to be the exact same video transfer! I think I'll keep the poster art from the new Kino Lorber case, but watch the Australian disc whenever I spin this one. I've got to watch it again later, though; I only made it about 20 minutes in before I had to give up and stop watching due to my audio sync frustrations.
