"Gears are turning" on F1 sequel

With the success of F1: The Movie, Apple is starting to reassess its approach to the movie business. According to Variety, this includes developing a sequel to the Joseph Kosinski film:

“‘F1’ is going to be Apple’s biggest release at the box office by far,” says David A. Gross, who runs the FranchiseRe movie consulting firm. “This film looks like the successful business model Apple has envisioned and wanted to execute for several years.”

Meanwhile, gears are turning on a potential sequel to “F1,” according to knowledgable sources.

Moving forward, will “F1” embolden Apple to charge ahead with theatrical and cultivate a robust film slate? Or, after the long and winding three-year journey to produce “F1,” is the company more inclined to slow down and remain selective, taking only a few big swings with the right property and right people?

Just how much emphasis is put on the F1 sequel may depend on the overall approach Apple decides to take.

The 4 possibilities listed by Variety are:

• Apple goes full throttle into theatrical
• Apple behaves opportunistically with one-off passion projects
• Apple embraces streaming all the way
• Apple buys a Hollywood studio

Finally, Variety points out that

More people have been talking about “F1” than have ever discussed Netflix titles like “The Electric State,” “Red Notice” or “The Gray Man.” And if you’ve never heard of “Fountain of Youth,” a kid-friendly heist adventure led by John Krasinski and Natalie Portman which Apple dropped directly on streaming in May, you’d be forgiven.

Isn’t F1 already essentially Days of Thunder 2? In that it’s not just riding the coattails of Top Gun, its production concept is riding the coattails of Days of Thunder that was riding the coattails of Top Gun. I’m not sure I can handle any more levels of derivativeness.

I'd be all for it, although:

- It still has quite a long road to profitability if they want to operate on a traditional Hollywood model. But Apple may not care too.

- I do want to be surprised by them doing a Days of Thunder-F1 crossover, because for one thing you need Paramount, Warner, and Apple to all agree on a variety of terms. Then there's the topic of NASCAR and F1 agreeing to a number of factors, and I am curious how that'd work.

Idk if they'd try to do the elder statesman angle with Pitt again or what, but if they think there's a real chance at building out a multi-film saga around this, then I think they need a fresh approach. Timothee Chalamet has the star power, including among the demographics F1/Liberty Media and any movie studio would want to market towards.
