Default The Kitchen (Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish)

Deadline
Quote:
Melissa McCarthy is finalizing a deal to star with Tiffany Haddish in The Kitchen, the drama on which Andrea Berloff will make her directorial debut. New Line Cinema and DC Entertainment are making the film, with a screenplay that Straight Outta Compton scribe Berloff wrote based on the 2014 comic book series by Ollie Masters and Ming Doyle for DC’s Vertigo.

The Kitchen is an Irish mafia story set in Hell’s Kitchen, New York in the 1970s. An FBI sweep catches mob leaders, and while they are under arrest and their criminal enterprise is jeopardized, the mob wives take over. They end up running the illicit business in more vicious fashion than their husbands ever did.

Sounds pretty rad for a crime thriller...as a comedy though?

Yeah, I thought the same. Why even go the comedy route? It seems like a perfect vehicle for something gritty that verges on dark humour without going full belly laughs. I might pick the comic up. It seems like my cup of tea.

Tiffany Haddish needs to disappear. Girls Trip was the most overrated film of the year, and is firmly at the bottom of my 2017 list as the worst movie of the year. I am baffled at how people liked it and especially the praise that Haddish has gotten.

Well, the silver lining for me is if you take two of the most horrible, obnoxious, grating actresses and put them in the same movie, that means they can't be making two separate movies, which means I only have to avoid seeing one awful film instead of two.

Elisabeth Moss Joins Tiffany Haddish, Melissa McCarthy in Mob Drama ‘The Kitchen’
by Dave McNary - March 19, 2018

Elisabeth Moss will star with Melissa McCarthy and Tiffany Haddish in the mob drama “The Kitchen” for New Line Cinema and DC Entertainment.

“Straight Outta Compton” writer Andrea Berloff will direct from her own script, based on the comic book series by Ollie Masters and Ming Doyle from DC Entertainment’s Vertigo imprint. The movie will mark Berloff’s feature directorial debut. Michael De Luca is producing the film.

“The Kitchen” is a classic gangster pic that follows a group of Irish mobsters sent to prison. The wives take over their jailed spouses’ organized crime operation to become the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in 1970s Hell’s Kitchen. Moss will play the wife of an abusive husband who adapts to the violence of her new life. “The Kitchen” hits theaters on Sept. 20, 2019.

Moss won a Golden Globes and Emmy for her role on Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” which will soon debut its second season. She is best known for her TV work on “Mad Men” and “Top of the Lake.” She was in the Oscar best foreign language film nominee “The Square” and will next be seen in Sony Pictures Classics’ “The Seagull.”

Moss is repped by WME, the U.K.’s Independent, and Ribisi Entertainment.

Where does it say it's a comedy? Looks like they're going full drama. Could be interesting. Love Elisabeth Moss.

Domhnall Gleeson Heads To 'The Kitchen'
by James White -April 17,2018

The cast for new mob drama The Kitchen is just getting better as it grows. With Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish and Elisabeth Moss starring, the ensemble now includes Domhnall Gleeson.

As for Gleeson, he's playing Gabriel O’Malley, a Vietnam vet who worked for neighborhood gangsters as a hitman before skipping town. He returns to settle scores when the wives take over.

If that chick on the front of that comic is who MM is playing I have to say WTF? Maybe her sister would work but I don't see a fat loud mouth being that character...

I'm guessing that they're reworking this comic (I haven't read it nor heard of it) because the synopsis said that they're supposed to be wives if Irish mobsters but the cast leads me to believe that major changes are afoot.

One of my most anticipated films of the year. I love the premise, and I actually like all 3 of the actresses quite a bit.

Can't wait for a teaser trailer.
