Default DS9 Remaster NOT Happening yet

https://www.thevulcanreporter.com/ex...nine-remaster/

This is long overdue. Just a reminder to all the fans. It is my understanding this was delayed so long, and almost never happened because they lost so much money with TOS and TNG remasters. The reason for this is because we all (myself included) waited so long until the prices came down to buy the remastered seasons. If I recall they were something like 100$ a season at the start. Let this be a lesson, that if we want any hope of future projects like this (Voyager) then perhaps we should be willing to pay the prices from jump. Personally I will be buying all these seasons as they release at full price.

Hadn't considered that. I guess it might be a possibility that it would be on cbs all access for some time before it got physical releases. I believe even the TNG and TOS remasters were aired on tv for some time before they saw releases.

While the TNG releases were listed at $100 per season, they actually sold for around $60 each upon initial release. I bought each as initially priced.

Trying to read between the lines, it does not appear to be the perfect release we were hoping for. It sounds like they are going to rescan all the live shots into HD and use AI technology to upconvert the CGI scenes. Still better than what we have and I will support each season upon initial release.

Most of us aren't made of money, that's why normal people wait for a better price.
The article seems a tad confused, showing a pic clearly of Voyager while claiming it's DS9 and noting that Enterprise probably won't be getting a remaster soon. Erm, isn't that already on Blu ray?

Back in September, I started watching DS9 for the first time. I’m down to the last 10 episodes (I watched Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang earlier tonight). Figures a remaster would get announced now. That said, I’ve loved every minute of DS9 and would be happy to rewatch again. Just in HD this time.

Yes, Enterprise is already out on blu-ray. However, I think there were differences in filming approaches between earlier and later seasons, so it is possible that there could be some work done to improve upon the earlier release.

I also find the article a bit confusing, as if there was news to announce but the reporter wasn't exactly knowledgeable of all the facts.

I believe another major reason for ds9 being the least likely to have gotten the treatment was that they would have had to completely redo all the CGI, which was quite extensive (think of all the times odo shifted) and they said that was too costly, so perhaps the AI CGI thing was the straw that broke the camels back in allowing this to go forward. Even with less then perfect CGI, I welcome anything that looks better then what we currently have, which is pretty much VHS quality. I do remember seeing the tng seasons at 99$ on amazon when i first checked, but that could have been preorder, and I shamefully waited for them to drop into an all in 1 collection. I will not make that mistake again.

TNG was always my favorite but after I watched it and DS9 through completely recently, I think ds9 moved ahead of it slightly in my rankings. As far as rewatchability goes? Ds9 hands down in my book.

Agreed. While I watched DS9 in its original airing, it definitely plays better with a bit of binge watching, as noted in even the documentary. DS9 is my favorite now.

While this will likely be a buy for me, I refuse to be made a "hostage" by the studios to get future catalog releases from them. They're making plenty from streaming services and syndication on Star Trek and it's not fair for them to directly compare the costs of the remaster vs. revenue from the Blu-ray set - not like the remasters didn't also get sold to Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.

To be fair, this may have not been so much the case back when the TNG remaster came out, I believe in 2013.

We got a glimpse of what DS9 remastered in HD looks like in the What We Left Behind documentary and it was amazing. The documentary is free with ads on Youtube right now for anyone wanting to check it out.

DS9 has always been my favorite ST series. Can't wait for this.

I hope we get a Blu-ray out of this. I don't want to subscribe to Paramount+.

My second favorite Trek series (only because Picard and Data are fantastic). The $700 price tag to complete TNG was ridiculous.

Picard, Data, AND Riker. I would say warf as well, but he developed much more in ds9. The price was insane, but I think we can all agree the product was done extremly well. If I knew i'd have had to wait another decade to get ds9 done the same way, i'd have payed 1000$.

Fair point. We were told that the TNG blu-ray's didn't meet sales expectations. However, what those expectations were is unknown to use. For example, did they expect the blu-ray sales to cover all the remastering and new CGI costs, or just a part of it. Streaming and syndication is ongoing revenue, so in the long run they will make it back and some, but it could be they expected a portion of it sooner than later due to blu-ray sales, that did not come to fruition until much later.

To be fair, I doubt many paid that much. I bought all seasons based on pre-order pricing and it came much closer to $420 for all seasons.

Trustfully I liked the entire cast, even if they didn't give the women much to do. Face of the Enemy is one of my absolute favorites. I'm just happy DS9 is finally getting a restoration.

I paid around $20 per season after the fact. I started collecting them around 2017.
