Default Alien (1979) vs. The Thing (1982)

Boy this one's almost too close to call, but I think I'd give a slight edge to Alien. I think for me, the defining feature that sets Alien apart is the use of lighting/editing/pacing. I think The Thing might have a bit better rewatchability, though... Y tu?

EDIT: Finally found the Poll setting... vote away.

You really gonna make me choose!

Well, I guess The Thing will get less love, so I'll go for that!

On this site, I'm not convinced of that.
I'm also gonna presume that most people here have probably watched The Thing more recently than Alien because of the BR release.

Alien. One of the most terrifying creatures ever created!

Alien!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Thing is a very close second place due to the fact that once a year I have a dream about these two films mashed together into one jacked up, waking up in a cold sweat nightmare!!! Imagine Face Huggers and Spiderheads running you down in a long hallway!!!!!!

I think both do an excellent job of creating mood. I think that Alien, however, is better constructed and I like the direction a lot more. I also think it has a greater degree of watchability.

Omg....is this poll or the current results real? Yeah Yeah..ok The Thing is a nice little camp classic and a fun film (I own it). But next to a masterpiece like Alien it pales in comparison and no it's not even close...nor should it be. Writing, acting, directing, story, sets etc. etc. all go to Alien.

Completely agree. The Thing is nothing more than a genre film, despite the fact that it creates a distinct mood very well. Alien is a film masterpiece and arguably the finest in the horror genre.

A lot of The Thing supporters will say that it's also one of the greatest films from a technical standpoint.

Honestly, this poll should wait until after the release of Alien on Blu-ray. I haven't seen Alien in years, but I've seen The Thing a lot because it's on Blu-ray.

Both are phenomenal movies, but Alien is a visual masterpiece. Blu-ray is going to exploit it even more.

I'm hoping for a respectful release! I think we all know that neither Alien nor Aliens is going to be reference grade, but lets hope that it still looks pretty good.

OK I liked Alien, it's just not one of my favorite movies. I really didn't care for The Thing back in the day - Tried it again when it was released on BD - got rid of it

I voted Alien and am looking forward to the Quadrilogy release - really surprised that this race is so close though...

Because of its age and the way it was filmed. There is no way it's going to be reference grade or even a 4.5 PQ. It's much too dark of a film.
