Quote:
Ecological and cosmic horror haunt the isolated Block Island Sound in this NETFLIX horror stunner! Synapse Films now brings the terrifying vision of the McManus Brothers to home video on the 4K UHD Blu-ray format with exciting special features! Something terrifying is happening off the coast of Block Island. A strange force is thriving, influencing residents and wildlife alike. Birds are dropping out of the sky and fish are mysteriously washing up on shore. As some residents are suffering from inexplicable emotional collapse, Harry Lynch (Chris Sheffield, The Stanford Prison Experiment) watches with dread as his father grows increasingly forgetful, confused and angry. Very, very angry! His sister Audry (Michaela McManus, Into the Grizzly Maze, TV's The Orville), whose work in marine biology will soon prove invaluable, returns to town with her daughter and leads them all towards chilling revelations that will affect her family in unimaginable ways. The Block Island Sound is a hair-raising new horror creation from Kevin and Matthew McManus, Emmy-nominated writers and producers of American Vandal and Cobra Kai. Delivering thrills while touching on a range of the signature worries of our times, from conspiracy theories and climate change to unpreventable familial breakdowns, this film is "a well-constructed puzzle box of a movie" (Josh Hurtado, Screen Anarchy) that "will haunt you long after it's over." (Molly Henery, Blogging Banshee). Synapse Films is proud to present the world-premiere 4K UHD release of The Block Island Sound in a stunning presentation with high-dynamic range (HDR10) and eerie 5.1 surround sound.

Never heard of it. Looks Lovecraftian? Is it rewatchable?

Yeah, no clue here either. Couldn't help myself though, and just blind-bought the 4k. It looks and sounds totally up my alley. There aren't a lot of releases these days that I feel are worth taking a blind shot at, but I'm a sucker for these obscure Lovecraftian horrors with some solid atmosphere and a potent score.

It’s on Netflix so you can test it out before committing (which is what I did and, yeah, ended up preordering, but it’ll be a dice roll title for most viewers).

I don't stream at all. I do miss the good old Netflix rental days of getting "8 dvd discs at a time". I was ripping through 20+ discs a week with that old physical media rental platform, for many years, uncovering all sorts of odd almost-gems that were new to me. I burned through several 500-disc queues like an Oregon forest fire in a very dry season. Way back, their dvd library was nothing to sneeze at.

For whatever it’s worth, here’s my own personal X/Twitter review for it: “Merely creepy, never scary, THE BLOCK ISLAND SOUND maybe isn’t such great shakes as sci-fi horror, but it’s incredibly effective as a ‘mental illness within a family’ character study. I could have given my right arm for three times as much Jim Cummings.”

I don't think we've had much genuinely brutal, or even genuinely effective, horror in a good many years. A few nuggets scattered here and there, no doubt, but overall, not much at all that's impressed me. These days, I settle for "solid enough to be generally re-watchable at some point." I've been digging more foreign horror.

It's hard to believe that The Witch, a title that still feels like "newer" horror to me, is almost TEN years old already!

I watched this last night an enjoyed it. Cast was mostly excellent.

Anyone looking for really simple answers might not get what they're looking for.

Not keen on the slipcover but I like the case cover.

I'll buy the 4K Blu-ray.

Either Orbitdvd has lost their marbles, or my copy of this uhd somehow already shipped, about 20 days early, and is apparently out for delivery later today. Looking forward to checking this one out, more than most.

Atomic Movie Store shipped mine yesterday, so I don’t know what the deal is since Synapse’s own site still says December 10th is the street date (not that I’m complaining).

Wow, this thread is a graveyard. Shame this didn’t get more attention/interest/appreciation.

The sign of a decent flick….I found myself awake at 4am. I wanted something fresh, solid, well-made and engaging to put on. I found myself wanting to re-watch this. I enjoyed it even more the second time around, despite knowing exactly what was going to happen. Good score, convincing performances, clean editing, consistent pacing, and it helps that the disc is technically very strong (looks decent enough for a digitally shot film). Definitely a solid buy overall, and one I’ll enjoy revisiting periodically. Win!!!!

Part of reason I didn't bother is I've found most non-mainline Synapse releases, that just seem kind of random, are terrible in my experience

Yeah, I took a gamble, but based on good advance feedback from Filmmaker.

I love this movie. Surely I'm not the only one who was blown away when I figured out what the film was really about?

First found out about The Block Island Sound from a fellow member's post in the What are you watching tonight? thread (in the North America sub-forum). It sounded intriguing, but I forgot about it until today when checking another film out on the IMDb. Have made a note of it (will possibly get Synapse's Blu-ray release).
