---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lionsgate President and Co-Chief Operating Officer Steve Beeks and filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola announced today that Lionsgate and American Zoetrope have entered into a multi-year home entertainment distribution agreement (including Blu-ray). The first title released as part of the deal was Coppola latest film, Tetro; the next one will be the renowned and award-winning war film Apocalypse Now, scheduled for Blu-ray release on October 19.

With new transfers supervised directly by Coppola, Apocalypse Now will come out in two deluxe editions: the 2-Film Set, and the 3-disc Full Disclosure Edition. The 2-Film Set will include both Apocalypse Now - The 1979 Cut and Apocalypse Now Redux and will also include over nine hours of special features. The Full Disclosure Edition will add the seminal making-of documentary Hearts of Darkness, a 48-page collectible booklet and storyboard, photo and marketing archives.

"We are thrilled to be in business with Francis Ford Coppola, one of the greatest filmmakers of our time," said Beeks. "Having directed, produced and written some of the most financially successful and critically acclaimed movies in U.S. cinematic history, Coppola is one of the masters of modern cinema. We are honored to add a selection of his most renowned and personal works to our library and look forward to releasing these titles on all formats."

"With their expertise in the home entertainment marketplace, we consider Lionsgate to be the perfect partner to distribute some of my most enduring films," said Coppola. "We are excited to be collaborating with them and hope to continue to enthrall our existing fans while also reaching a whole new audience for these films by presenting them in the highest quality format available along with exceptional in-depth special features."

From thedigitalbits.com:
In "unofficial" release news today, here's something VERY cool for you Coppola fans. We've been hearing rumors about this for a while now from our industry sources, and some of you may be aware that director Francis Ford Coppola's American Zoetrope recently licensed a number of their catalog titles to Lionsgate. In fact, Lionsgate just a couple months ago released their own DVD version of Apocalypse Now: Redux. Well... we can confirm that the studio IS currently working on an ultimate Blu-ray release of Apocalypse Now. And from what we've heard, they are absolutely doing it right and including everything you'd want from an ultimate release of the film. (Note that a pre-order listing for just such a release appeared very briefly on Amazon.ca about a week ago, but was quickly pulled. It indicated the set would include BOTH cuts of the film AND the Hearts of Darkness documentary in the same package.) It's still a little early and nothing has been officially announced yet by the studio, so consider this info Rumor Mill worthy for the time being. But hopefully we'll be able to report more when we get back from the Con. Love that smell of napalm in the morning!

Though I'm astonished Paramount would have handed this particular title over to someone else. It ain't exactly DROP ZONE...

Very good news, although I'm amazed that Paramount have relinquished this title to Lionsgate. It just shows how little interest they have in doing the work to release their own back catalog on BD if they are prepared to licence such a high profile title to another studio. I wonder whether they will do the same thing for other classic titles such as Chinatown, Rosemary's Baby, Nashville, Once Upon A Time In The West, etc.

And I suppose it's too much to hope that it will be presented in its correct aspect ratio of 2.35 this time, instead of that ludicrous compromise ratio of 2.0 on which Storaro still insists (and to which Coppola seems to acquiesce).

I would love to see Hearts of Darkness included on this release. I haven't seen it in such a long time. It was a facinating doc, not like all the pre-fab promo pieces that are included with movies these day.

Probably, yeah. However, we can dream .
Perhaps Heart of Darkness is in HD. How wonderful would that be?

Most, if not all, of The American Zoetrope films are no longer with Paramount. Francis Ford Coppola moved them to Lionsgate, the recent release of Apocalypse Now Redux is through Lionsgate.

The advantage for us then is a below $10 price point not far after its release. Lionsgate titles tend to plummet.

I hope the PQ quality is good. Some of Lionsgate's titles are a bit shabby.

My thoughts, too. What a wasted opportunity for Paramount and its Sapphire Editions...

If it is indeed both cuts then I'm definitely excited. I watched Redux for the first time the other night and I didn't like the added material one bit. Scenes like the french plantation and the meeting with the Playboy bunnies add nothing to the story and stop a movie that is already a slow-burn dead in it's tracks. I haven't seen Hearts of Darkness since it first came out on video so I would love to see it again.

The last time I watched Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse it was on laserdisc, circa 1993. Would love to see this with both versions of Apocalypse Now.
