Default StudioCanal Kurosawa RAN Blu-ray

Amazon lists RAN available for pre-order... it also says it was released yesterday. After my "life gamble" and "ashes of time" blu-ray pre-orders literally vanished, I am wondering what the deal is with this one.

There is a RAN version released by French distributor Canal +.
I bought it, played it , and returned it next day to the shop.
This version is nearly better than the dvd-release, so don't get fooled.

Default Question about StudioCanal's upcoming release of Ran

I feel a little stupid asking this but is it going to have English subtitles? I'm only asking because I look on the page for Ran listed on this site and it has about 8 different subtitle languages, yet not a listing for English. I also noticed that it has a listing for an English Master Audio track? Are we getting a dub or is this English track one of the commentary tracks?

Lionsgate is just releasing a US version of the international Studio Canal Blu-ray Disc.

So it will have DTS-HD MA Japanese with English subtitles.

I'm skeptical that english subtitles will be included. Reviews I've read of the Studio Canal (France) HD-DVD release mentioned that english subtitles were missing. Also, there is a Lionsgate news release that indicates no english subtitles at
http://www.lionsgatepublicity.com/ep...Collection.doc

Read to the bottom of the document under the heading "program information" and you'll notice that english subtitles aren't listed for RAN. They are listed for the blu-ray of Contempt but not for RAN. This is a deal breaker for me, even if it is in blu-ray. No english subtitles = no purchase. I can't stand listening to english dubs especially for a classic like RAN.

Me, too. Which is why there will be English subtitles. Lionsgate is not going to risk a huge sales loss by not including English subs.

This is the "Studio Canal Collection", not a release by Canal specifically. Canal does not control the film in any English speaking territories, but their partners like LG and Optimum do, so they left off English subtitles because no one else was putting the film out at the time.

So far as I know an english dub doesn't even exist for the film, and no one who purchases Kurosawa films would want one anyway. Dub-only would be completely unmarketable

This release is going to make all of us so sad for what could have been (the Criterion release).

I thought Seven Samurai was pretty boring... but yeah, Ran is good, much better in my opinion, but most probably wouldn't agree with me on that. SS is just too damn long and it gets pretty boring.

Anyway I just sold my CC DVD set yesterday so I went ahead and ordered this, should be here in a couple of days, I hope it was worth the trouble of replacing.

Ran is brilliant in all aspects, but for those who lack the patience for subtitles and/or black & white I would say Ran is the most accessible of Kurosawa's samurai movies.

I ordered this one today. I watched Ran many years ago, but did not appreciate it at the time. Looking forward to viewing it this weekend.

I got my copy of Ran this morning. Since I also have the Criterion DVD of Ran I wanted to compare the two of them and give you guys an idea of what to expect with this BD release.

Let me start by saying I am not an expert on PQ or SQ. I mostly just watch movie as a hobby and I would never make any type of claim at being an expert in making detail critics of both technical and artistic skills involve in making them.

Let me say right away, as a BD release it's very disapointing on just that alone. I do not own a lot of BD but I will say right now, this is the worst of them all. What make's it disapointing is of course because of the movie involve in this transfert. I suppose one might say, all BD should receive top notch transferts and I would agree with that. However there is less chance in being disapointed in a slightly off transfert for Ace Ventura for example but to be extremely sad by a bad transfert for Ran. I find it very uneven. Some places where the details in the background truly come out and then suddendly from the same camera angle everything get's a bit blurry. I am not sure exactly from what master the restauration took place? Is this the best they could do with the master material they had? Well I suppose once again that it could be but it's hard to justify when you see the work done by Kino on The General, a movie 60 years older than Ran.

So what if you own the Criterion DVD? If I were to compare the two of them, I would say that this BD is only between 20-30% superior in PQ compare to the DVD and I might actualy be too nice due to my love of this movie and Kurosawa, I might be trying to convinve myself. In fact when to be brutaly honest there is time where the DVD seem even less foggy then the BD.

What would I recommend? Well if you are a true fan of this movie and you want it in the best format possible the BD is still superior then the DVD but not by very much unfortunately. If you have another DVD beside the Criterion then maybe getting the BD will work out well for you. I do know that some of the other DVD releases are brutal to watch for Ran. Perosnaly while a bit sad I am stil lglad to own it in order to keep my collection of Kurosawa growing (call it a falling of mine). For others who have the Criterion DVD I would say wait to see if you can get it on sale or at some lower price. As it stand now, even if I bought it, this BD is not worth the $30 CAN I paied for it.

Thanks for your honesty here P@t. This problem with PQ is a profound disappointment for me.

If I had the Criterion I wouldn't buy the Blu-ray. However, I have the Fox Lorber version...

Thanks for your review, P@t_Mtl. As I said before, there should be an uprising of 'Gladiator'-type proportions over the shoddy treatment that 'Ran' received on Blu, but unfortunately that ain't gonna happen..... Very sad.....
