I wonder how big that thing will be? Looks kind of neat though, I like the design.

That article claims they're targeting 4K@60, it'll be fun to see how true that ends up being. Btw I don't understand the motivation for using NVMe storage when you consider the current benchmarks show at most 2-3 seconds improvements to loading times on PC games. I guess maybe some kind of custom OEM design coupled with a dev enviroment designed to utilize the NVMe speed more efficiently might do it, but going by current real world metrics it doesn't make much sense compared to regular SATA SSDs.

If it’s as they claim double the power of the One X (which already does some games beautifully at 4K60) then it looks like 4K60 will be the baseline instead of 4K30. Up to 120fps or 8K resolution on lower intensity games seems totally possible with that too.

It's going to depend on the games and how much devs can utilize the hardware. With how they've been hyping ray tracing support I don't think AAA games capped at 30 is going to become a distant memory just yet.

Oh my bad it’s 4x the power of the One X. Yeah, I’d say there shouldn’t be many 30fps experiences if at all.

Correct. Scarlet was the development code name.

Do you actually read the posts you quote? Besides, a lot of AAA games barely manage 4K60 on high-end PC gaming rigs as it is.

Will be a miracle if 3rd party games have that kind of optimisation day 1.
It does raise the question of how critical new interations will be this gen.
Xbox going with the name X Series certainly suggests they know this might be the case.

With the direction Phil Spencer has been pushing the Xbox brand, I think they'll do something similar to the Xbox One/S/X iterations they did this gen, as well as them continuing their great support for backwards compatibility and the general media support with 4K Blu-ray and streaming. Wouldn't surprise me if they start to integrate even more support between Windows players and Xbox players, such as maybe save migration or cross-platform play.

Yeah growing their own eco system is an advantage Sony don't have. It's just about getting it all synchronised correctly. I think the real acid test for Microsoft is reestablishing themself in Europe. Which is going to be very diffcult no matter how good the console is.

This is Future proofing at it's finest. As I've heard since I just got back into gaming, this'll keep your previous downloaded and purchased games. I dig that idea so I don't have to constantly start from scratch in my games if I don't want to.

8K isn't widely available to my knowledge currently(I know there are 8K TVs out there), for the consumer market, but when it does everyone will know what to use, even 8K down-scaled to 4K will look amazing. I kind of question the design a bit but I'm sure I can find a way to fit it somewhere.

I think some of that is down to Europe having a strong history of PC gaming, as well as the ridiculous success of the PS2 still lingering in a lot of people's minds, so the casual gamer just gets whatever the newest Playstations is for their Fifa and CoD fix. There's also the almost complete lack of unique Xbox exclusive games, even Sony sold a few consoles off of Bloodborne.

I think it's more accurate to attribute that to the PS1. I don't think it's been stated enough how Sony saved the home console market in the mid 90s. So many failed 3D systems, the Saturn optimised for 2D over 3D ect.

In comes Sony, small gray box, low launch price, an advertising campaign so ingenious; that it looked effortless in how immediate and natural the PS was in Europes popular landscape of the time. It's legacy in the minds of Europeans is that of Playstation being an inseparable memeber of the family. There has never been an electronic product like the PS1 which has achieved such a lasting effect.

Unless Microsoft understand that history, I don't see them ever beating out Sony in Europe ever.

Yep ive been an Xbox fanboy since they started releasing consoles. So, i'll definitely be picking this up day one. Hopefully this disk drive will support DV playback, unlike the One X&S.

It should, as games as well will use DV.
