lol-- saw this one back on TV when it first aired-- remember thinking it was great as a kid-- bought it on dvd about 10 years ago and was pretty mediocre--
still fun to see for nostalgia reasons but don't expect much! |

Man I hate these shoddy release dates. They are better off just not giving a date or waiting to make the announcement when they are 100% sure. I doubt Devil Dog was released today considering amazon is now saying it takes 1 to 3 months to ship. If it was released today, WTF is up with amazon? 1 to 3 months? Are they going to remake the movie in that time?

I just got the shipping notification. It should get here by the end of the week. Burial Grounds will ship tomorrow since this webstore isn't breaking street date on it. Which doesn't bother me since they were both $11 each before shipping.

The comments about the PQ are confusing.. Is the overall PQ good, or is the "good" the exception?

![]() ![]() When a suburban family acquires an adorable German Shepherd puppy, the new addition to the household seems like a dream come true. There is just one minor problem. This dog is not like other dogs. He is the Devil Dog, a demonic offspring conceived in a cult ceremony. This sinister canine does not abide the devoutly Catholic housemaid who wears a cross around her neck, so she quickly perishes in flames. The father, played by Richard Crenna (First Blood), is initially oblivious to the fact that the dog has turned his wife, played by Yvette Mimieux (The Time Machine), and his two loving children, played by Kim Richards and Ike Eisenmann from Escape to Witch Mountain, into wicked disciples of Satan who perform sacrifice rituals in an upstairs attic room. When suspicious neighbors and townspeople begin to perish in horrifying ways, however, he realizes that he has to muzzle the evil force before it has the entire community on a short leash. The 1978 made-for-television movie, Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell, is not exactly best in show when it comes to horror cinema, but fans of forgotten genre obscurities from that decade will eagerly lap it up, for, if no other reason, the sight of accomplished actors keeping a straight face despite the ridiculous premise. Everything is serious business to Crenna's protagonist, even when he is facing off against the demon animal who glares at him with glowing eyes. There is also an uncanny joy to be found in watching the two child actors from the Disney Witch Mountain movies show their deathly corrupt and hostile sides. Director Curtis Harrington, who also helmed the television hit, Killer Bees, and theater fare like The Killing Kind, Night Tide, and Queen of Blood, delivers the goods with serviceable competence without winking at the audience. I miss the heyday of network television original movies from the 1970s and early 1980s, so this one, however laughable, hits the sweet spot with regard to my nostalgic leanings. In terms of visceral scares, its bark is worse than its bite, because we know that overt violence and gore are not part of the equation. One particular scene involving a lawnmower blade, however, amps the tension to an impressive extent. Be on the lookout for the always-amazing Martine Beswick (From Russia with Love, Thunderball) as the master of a Satanic cult. The one and only R.G. Armstrong (Predator, Lone Wolf McQuade) is also perfect as another devil worshiper who gives the puppy to the family. This Shriek Show Blu-ray delivers a fine-looking transfer, and two VHS insert sequences do not interfere with the momentum to a detrimental extent. I did not notice the “boiling water” audio phenomenon until it was pointed out to me in this thread, but so it did not bother me in the slightest. The interview with Harrington is a strong supplement, but one featurette that supposedly included various cast members is actually a one-minute movie trailer of sorts. I grabbed a copy of Devil Dog on amazon today. I'd completely forgotten about it until this thread got bumped a few days ago. I can never have enough killer dog movies, especially bad ones. Besides, I'm down for anything with Richard Crenna.
I was thinking Saint Bernard, the upcoming Severin release, was a killer dog flick until I read the synopsis. Guess not. IMO, as far as killer dog movies are concerned... The mailman's death in Man's Best Friend is the funniest killer dog sequence I've ever seen, but the original Suspiria features the creepiest murder. Watching a seeing-eye dog turn on its master is really unnerving. Cujo is the most intense killer dog flick, while The Pack (2015) and The Breed (2006) are just average, with The Pack being the more competent of the two and The Breed being more entertaining. I still need to get around to watching Dogs (1976) and Monster Dog (1984). Maybe I'll do that once Devil Dog shows up in the mail, and make it a triple feature. |

There are only two short sections that are sourced from videotape (or so it seems) and therefore significantly worse, but I'm going to speculate - this is just my own speculation - that the effects for these bits were done on video and the rest of the feature was scanned from camera negatives, which wouldn't have had the finished effects. (These poorer quality segments are the only ones with special effects.) If anyone knows otherwise, please speak up; again, this is purely a guess on my part. |

It sounds like it will probably just be a reissue of their old disc with updated artwork: https://rue-morgue.com/devil-dog-the...r-details-art/ ![]() |
