Default Star Wars: Rogue One SPOILER Discussion (for those who have already seen the film)

I created the Star Wars: The Force Awakens SPOILER Discussion Thread last year, so I'd like to do the same for Star Wars: Rogue One.

I'd love to read discussions of Star Wars: Rogue One without having to click on spoiler tags all of the time, so this thread is intended for feedback from those who have already seen the film.

I'll be seeing the movie tomorrow night, so I'll stay away from my own thread for the next day or so.

Moderators, feel free to delete this thread if it's overkill in the forum, but I think that it's the right thing to do.

If you have not yet seen Star Wars: Rogue One, then be forewarned that HERE THERE BE SPOILERS!

I get that this is the society we live in now where everyone has to spread everything or be "the first" to see something or know something but can't we all just enjoy things without spoiling them for other people? It's all upsetting and makes me happy I saw the movie at a preview screening.

People are seriously just the worst.

We got a Norwegian Princess Leia Scene was too short to tell if they have done any Carrie Fisher superimposing on her, but looked very nice from what I could see

The Vader scene at the end really crowned a stellar movie. Totally unexpected and totally AWESOME!!

They also did an excellent job of keeping all the tech in Ep 4 style making for a seemless transition, thats one of the things I was most afraid of going in.

It's all over YouTube and Instagram. (So is the rest of the movie sadly)

You know, something like Han dying - that's a spoiler. Vader showing up and wrecking some rebel's shit - not really a spoiler. We knew he was going to be in the movie (unless you avoided all the trailers and were somehow ignorant of the fact that Vader was in charge of personally chasing down the Death Star plans), and we knew that Vader was a badass. Him killing a bunch of folks was 100% guaranteed to be on the menu.

I get that it was trying to be it's own thing, stand alone from the rest of the movies both stylistically and thematically, but yeah - not having that there, when the audience really needed an info-dump was just weird just didnt feel right.

I still listen to that regularly. He really did an amazing job.
While it wasn't perfect (I'll still pick up the CD after work today) I thought it was a LOT better than the flaccid effort from Williams in E7.

And yes, I agree that the Shadows soundtrack was really really strong.

I wouldnt put it at a pixar level, but as a huge Hammer Horror fan with many, many, many hours of Cushing under my belt - yeah, CG Cushing look wrong to me. Almost there, but not quite.

The Ghost was flying with the rebel fleet in a couple of shots, Chopper is somewhere on Yavin (I didnt see him, but that's what I've read - they took the physical prop to england last year) and General Syndulla got name checked over the PA on Yavin.

I will say that my nitpicks are as follows:

The Crawl: It really should still be there. It's a great "jumping off" point for the audience and really excites everyone for what they're about to see. I also miss the cheer from the audience. This just feels completely dead at the beginning and probably doesn't help that the first 20 minutes, or so, are pretty boring with exposition and setting everyone up. None of the other 7 films have that problem.

The title card: God I felt like I was watching a TV show when that lame music hit. Generic and dull in comparison to how grandiose the other movies are at the beginning. I wouldn't have even put a title card there. Just keep the movie moving.

The music: Comparatively, it sucks. Granted, almost everyone compared to JW sucks but, really, it's almost like he didn't try. What seems like Jyn's theme sounds like a re-purposed "Across the Stars." The only non-JW Star Wars music that, to my ears, was phenomenal was Joel McNeely's Shadows of the Empire. I still listen to that regularly. He really did an amazing job.

The haircuts. No one in the background really had 70's haircuts, that I saw, especially the pilots. If you wanted to match it up, you'd think that they'd try to have them match.

Otherwise, I really loved it. I have no major issues with a majority of the film and I certainly didn't need to think about it like I did TFA. Can't wait to see it again on Thursday.

Music bothered me abit too. Atleast there is a section from starwars theme at the very end of the credits

There's no guarantee it would have been any better. The only reason Michael gets any leeway is that he only had 4 weeks to write the whole score. But, still, there's really very little memorable here. The only part I liked was the music of them crash landing on the rain planet.

So were they 'ordered' to stay away from SW theme, or is it a creative choice ?

I write music, the guy had 4 weeks to do the music. Most film composers like John Williams gets months to do a score. For the time he had he did a great job.

Every time Donnie Yen's theme would play I would think it was about to break into Across the Stars. It's ridiculous how similar the intro is.

Someone on JWFan said it was his but I didn't get that impression at all. And since the soundtrack isn't out, we don't know

Wow! I have to say that you & I literally share the exact same nitpicks. I felt exactly the same way about everything you mentioned. I really wish they had the crawl, and that title card really was super lame.

And I also thought the music just wasn't the same for me. I found myself just wanting to hear some of the OT themes throughout. Every time a familiar theme came on, I got a smile on my face. Too bad they couldn't just re-use the same score (or remixes of them) for the whole film.

I really enjoyed it. Fantastic movie. A lot of good feels.

My only nitpicks... some of the acting was a bit off. And Darth Vader does not do puns. Did not care for that at all. Otherwise, really, really great.

This. I cringed when he made that pun. As he walked away, I muttered to myself "He doesn't do puns, what the hell?" My friend next to me chuckled.

Yeah I was like huh? when he was choking Krennic and said along the lines of "Don't choke on your aspirations..." Why would he do that to Krennic? The only time he would choke someone is when Vader was pissed at them...example when that guy was pissing him off when he was insulting the force or killing off Ozzl for coming in too close to the system.... but what did Krennic do?

He hasn't failed Vader....so wth?

A few of those pilots were straight out of Star Wars 1977!
