Default University of Cambridge fights OLED burn-in with new production method

SELECT QUOTES

"The University of Cambridge has developed a new method for creating the blue-light-emitting diodes found in OLED displays. By insulating the diodes with alkylene straps, researchers say that they have created a more energy-efficient OLED that eliminates one of the display type’s most notable flaws: burn-in."

"The current manufacturing process of OLED displays include the introduction of additional materials to help combat the dreaded OLED burn-in. If OLED development shifted over to include proper insulation for the blue-light-emitting diodes, the scientists hypothesize that production could become cheaper since any additional burn-in prevention methods would be unnecessary. Additionally, utilizing this method would create OLED displays that would reduce operating costs by requiring lower amounts of power."

Interesting. Less power+burn-in protection would surely also mean they can be run even brighter, with less ABL.

I always wonder whether these advances are first patented and then published so that they can sell it to X, Y, Z company or whether maybe LG etc. have their own engineers and methods to already mitigate the Burn In risk as well as relax ABL but choose not to so they can year on year keep releasing incremental software capped improvements.

I'm not upgrading till 2028 roughly but what i do know is that when i finally get around to upgrading i hope ABL has been largely eliminated or highly restrained and the Blue PHOLEDs we have been hearing about should be fully in use.

Personally i was disappointed to see that OLED somehow is ham strung with the same stupid sample and hold method for motion handling which is a plague for LCDs and hoped it would have basically been like Plasma TVs instead.

I also think it will be interesting to see how OLEDs hold up against the incoming Micro LED TVs on the horizon once Samsung solve production issues and Sony are showing off their own new LCD based tech to compete.

These are the universities that give me positive emotions. It is immediately clear that the university is developing and does not stand still. In ordinary ones, for example where I studied, this is not even close. I’ll just keep silent about training, I even looked for an annotated bibliography writing service, used https://ca.edubirdie.com/annotated-b...riting-service for this and no one told me anything. In short, in a word, no one cares. By the way, the university will patent it and sell it, earn money and invest in the development of the university. The strategy is perfect.

I'm always curious to see how the Universities like this can exploit the students. They'll basically sometimes use many of them to develop, patent and profit to the tunes of millions whilst the key figureheads (students) are leaving University without any likely renumeration and tens of thousands of debt after a pat on the back and a piece of A4 paper.

If these advances were significantly more equitable i'd sing their virtues a bit more but universities are nothing more than a racket these days focused on making money.

A lot of the University 'new methods' never reach the consumer market.

Lots of R&D is spent not only in the creation process but more so in the testing process.

LG’s EVO WBE Panels were created back in 2015 by third party. Not officially used until 2021.
