Ryunosuke Kamiki (Taki) will appear in Suzume as a new character

Kamiki plays Sōta's friend Tomoya Serizawa

The official website for Suzume (Suzume no Tojimari or literally, Suzume's Door-Locking), Makoto Shinkai's first new film in three years, revealed on Tuesday that the film has cast Ryunosuke Kamiki (Taki in your name.) as Tomoya Serizawa. Serizawa is Sōta's friend, and he cares about his friends despite speaking and acting rowdily.

RADWIMPS' "Kanata Haruka," one of the film's two theme songs, will be distributed online on Friday.

The film will open in Japan on November 11. The first 12 minutes of the film will air in Japan on NTV alongside Shinkai's your name. movie on Friday.

Shinkai also penned a novelization of the film that shipped on August 24. Denki Amashima will launch a manga adaptation of the film in Kodansha's Monthly Afternoon magazine on October 25.

Saw it tonight and thought it was fantastic. Of the trilogy of films, I'll rank this second between "Your Name" first and "Weathering with You" at third. Like the other two films, it's an exploration of natural disasters through fantasy and supernatural elements and the confrontation of memories, and done absolutely well with a few frightening moment (considering recent Japanese events). Great casting, fun choice of 70s/80s Japanese music and there's a fun obvious Ghibli reference in there as well with "Kiki's Delivery Service" in one scene.

Suzume is the first big Makoto Shinkai anime film to open in November, moving from the usual summer openings of Your Name and Weathering With You. Though this doesn’t seem to have been an issue for the anime film as it was the biggest opening for a Shinkai film ever and the 9th biggest three-day opening of all time in Japan.

As of Sunday, November 13, Suzume has made 1.88 billion yen (US$13.51 million) on the back of 1.08 million tickets sold. Despite the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever on the same day, Suzume took over screens all over Japan with back-to-back showings every day from morning to night with Wakanda Forever only getting a small number of screenings in comparison.

Suzume made 114.7% of Weathering With You’s three-day opening box office gross. Back in 2019, Weathering With You had an increase of 28.6% over Your Name’s three-day opening, making Suzume the best opener for a Shinkai film. Though, as mentioned earlier, Your Name and Weathering With You opened either during or just before Japan’s summer holidays and ran over Obon, giving them the best chance at the box office. Suzume isn’t so blessed in that regard with the winter holidays being after both THE FIRST SLAM DUNK and Avatar 2 open at the end of December.

The next few weeks will decide where Suzume ends up on the all-time charts and if it comes close to Weathering With You’s total box office. It’s highly unlikely to even come close to Your Name or even One Piece Film Red.

Suzume is directed by Makoto Shinkai, who also penned the screenplay for the film alongside Masayoshi Tanaka as the character designer, Kenichi Tsuchiya as the animation director and Takumi Tanji as the art director with animation production at CoMix Wave Films.

Suzume released in Japan on November 11 with Crunchyroll teaming up with Sony Pictures and Wild Bunch International to bring the feature to global audiences outside of Asia in early 2023.

The Mainichi Shimbun's Mantan Web reported on Monday that Makoto Shinkai's Suzume (Suzume no Tojimari) anime film has crossed 6.269 billion yen (about US$45.5 million) in its first 17 days at the Japanese box office. The film has sold a cumulative total of 4.60 million tickets.

The film earned 843 million yen (US$6.10 million) on Saturday and Sunday and sold 612,000 tickets on the same two days, ranking at #1 for the weekend.

The film opened at #1 on November 11 and sold 1.33 million tickets and earned 1.88 billion yen (about US$13.49 million) in its first three days. The film sold 38.7% more tickets and earned 47.4% more than Shinkai's acclaimed your name. film, which earned 1,277,960,000 yen (about US$12.51 million at the time) in its first three days. It also sold 14.8% more tickets and earned 14.4% more than Shinkai's previous film Weathering With You, marking the strongest opening three days of Shinkai's films.

I was wondering what they were doing to do for the Western title, and IMO shortening it to Suzume seems to be a reasonable choice considering the lack of compelling and/or catchy direct translations for Suzume no Tojimari.

The film will get a theatrical release in the Philippines in March 8 with English subs.
Surprisingly, the film will be distributed by Warner Bros., of all people, while the two previous Shinkai films were released in the Philippines by Lionsgate.
The film will be co-distributed by Lionsgate and Warner Bros. in the Philippines.

Lionsgate Philippines (which has become a prominent anime distributor here) always releases anime films with subs, even if a dub does exist internationally. At least this never means we get hilariously awful Lionsgate dubs, like with the Russian Pinocchio movie with Pauly Shore.
