Default '48 Hrs.' Remake in the Works With 'Good Time' Filmmakers

'48 Hrs.' Remake in the Works With 'Good Time' Filmmakers (Exclusive)

Quote:
As with Good Time, Josh Safdie will handle script duties on top of directing and will co-write the script with Ronald Bronstein, who co-wrote Good Time. New to the equation will be Jerrod Carmichael, the comedian who starred on and co-created the NBC comedy The Carmichael Show.

Good Time has brought acclaim to the Safdies and has been nominated this year for several Independent Spirit Awards. The brothers were nominated for a Palm d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, where the movie premiered and won an award for its score.

48hrs is one of my favorite movies, but I do understand that it is dated and if they look to make it and outright serious movie they can take the basic idea and maybe make a decent movie. However, there is no real reason to call it 48 hrs since most movie goers today probably haven't seen or know very little of the film. It's not as popular as Lethal Weapon and Die Hard is.

As I said, the plot is pretty basic and so it's not hard to build a movie off of it, but Hollywood doesn't have anything that can do what Murphy and Nolte did here. Them a long with Walter Hill's direction really lifted the material and so I hope they don't go for the type of banter we saw in the original. It will fail if they do.

I have never heard of 'Good Time' or from the people who made it, but good for them for landing a remake deal I guess.

Loved Good Time, but I don't really want the Safdie brothers doing remakes, especially something so archetypal like 48hrs.

Ugh. Can't we just get a restoration of the original and a blu-ray release of the sequel?

I wasn't in love with Good Time (and I haven't seen their previous movies), but at least it was propulsive indie filmmaking, something that felt a bit fresh. Now they're gonna do a remake? Meh.

48 Hrs.probably blended comedy and violent action better than any other movie from the 80's and Eddie Murphy made one of the more dynamic film debuts in the genre. Nick Nolte lends gruff gravitas and James Remar is certainly one of the more memorable psycho villains from this period. I'm not against remakes in general and have surprisingly liked quite a few...but this is one film I can't see being improved upon.

Never liked Safdie brothers. Good Time was a good, not great, time. Surprised that with their filmography they'd do a Hollywood remake.

I cherish the original (the sequel is pretty good as well IMO). One of the great Walter Hill's finest films. It was a great time of celluloid capture back when Eddie Murphy was a comic genius. I also can't leave out Nolte's great underrated performance either. Also James Remar is outstanding as the psychopathic cop killer. One of the best cop thrillers ever made. Dark, vicious, bold, hilarious, violent, and thrilling. The same film would never be made today. I'll most likely pass.

However, lets hope this remake will bring us one of Paramount's great remasters of late for the original and also finally a blu ray for Another 48 HRS. The much long talked about director's cut hopefully with all of the Walter Hill special editions that have come to blu ray.

Yeah, this is going to be a challenge for the filmmakers.

The sequel has its problems. It seems like Murphy approached the movie like a chore. He didn't really bring any comedy elements and it felt like Nolte acted a bit more goofy at times to overcompensate for it. I didn't really buy into the reveal of The Ice Man either. It just felt out of left field. It lac

That said, it has a good atmosphere. It hits a lot of the same pacing of the original. Everything just doesn't tye up in a satisfying fashion. Walter Hill never really recovered from this somewhat lackluster of a sequel.

Not sure why you decided to revive this thread after so long, elk, but it's worth noting that this project was already killed three years ago.

The general structure kind of was there from the original, but the stuff that was taken from the original was my least favorite stuff. It's funny. I met [48 Hours director] Walter Hill recently. He came to see a screening of Uncut Gems, and I know he had seen Good Time. I said to him, "Just to get this off the table, I know you know we were hired to do this remake of your film." And he's like, "Yeah. I was so confused because I've seen your movies now and these guys are definitely not short of any original ideas. Why do they need to remake something?" That sentiment is very true. That project will be shifted into something original because there are some incredible things that came out of that writing process. So we're talking to the studio now about doing that. But yeah, in terms of remaking stuff, [Martin] Scorsese, one of my favorite movies of Scorsese's is a remake. Cape Fear. They can be done, I just don't know how to do it yet.

Benny Safdie: There's certain stories that lend themselves a little better to it. That was the original idea. That's a very simple idea, maybe we can kind of parlay that into something else.

Josh Safdie: Yeah. Like the idea of remaking a movie that's known for its style makes no sense. You remake a movie that's known for maybe its story. You know what I mean? So that you can tell it in a new way. But there are some remakes that are happening that are like, that movie is all about the voice of the filmmaker and the style.

Benny Safdie: Scarface is like that. That's so invested in the character. Scarface was a remake of its own!

Josh Safdie: But there are movies that you see being remade that you just go, "But the original was all style!"
