Anime in 4k has been very messy. I hope it’s not another DNr fest.

I've had the Cinelicious release in my wishlist forever. Great movie.

Yeah, we've been burned too many times. It will cost a fortune and then look worse than the BLU. I will wait for more details and maybe even people's impressions after getting the disc whenever it is released.

The film was already restored uncut in 4k and is currently the newest master in existence, completed by Cinelicious. It is not a DNR fest.
That's obviously what this release is going to be. Cinelicious' disc is not very flattering when it comes to compression despite the film being made of so many still images. I bet on Arbelos announcing an upgrade of their disc in the coming months.

This is going to be absolutely glorious if they don't decide to do a DNR pass or hand it off to another bad authoring house.

I doubt it - they've yet to release a UHD.

This is an interesting announcement, as Belladonna isn't a title I would have assumed to have been a high seller for Anime Limited but it's great that an anime of this vintage has supposedly done so well. I'm in for this, but would sooner see any subtitled release of the 4K restorations of the Toei Doga films like The Little Prince and the Eight Headed Dragon.

That doesn't preclude them from doing so, no. They have to get their feet wet with something though I'd bet on a different title being picked first.

I’ve got the soundtrack LP and bonus 7” Record Store Day release - great music but never seen the film. Tempting.

Hopefully they added more of what they said was actually going to be in the book. The original was a misleadingly advertised rip-off! Hoo boy what a surprise that was.

When this restoration was being carried out and the Arbelos Blu-ray was first announced, some images of the master were shared and the grain structure was glorious, only for Arbelos to completely undermine it with their terrible pre-David M compression:

https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=2&x...7&l=0&i=0&go=1

Despite me bloody warning them beforehand of the task they had ahead: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...0&postcount=32

I don't believe the Anime Ltd version was much better. Hopefully the 4K is a big improvement.

Did David M handle this 4K? or do we know who did?

The anime UHDs I've got so far have been very nicely encoded, I'm hoping Belladonna will be the same. Wouldn't necessarily fear it being bad just because a different label botched the BD.
