New Orleans seems to have some awfully terrible luck with hurricanes with female names that end in 'a'.
Did y'all know that because of the destruction that Hurricane Katrina wrought that there can't be another Atlantic hurricane with that name anymore? They retired the name because of it. Hurricane Katrina had that weird double landfall and was pretty slow moving around Louisiana. I really hope they get lucky, the path of Ida looks awfully familiar but it is moving fast. Then again, Hurricane Katrina went from cat 3 to cat 5 in nine hours... |

Ida is forecast to hit the industrial corridor between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, site of three key ports, petrochemical sites, and a nuclear power plant.
https://yaleclimateconnections.org/2...nfrastructure/ New Orleans’ impossible situation A mandatory evacuation was issued for portions of New Orleans outside of their levee system on Friday, and a voluntary evacuation for inside the levee system. However, no mandatory evacuation was ordered for the city because officials judged there was insufficient time to set up contraflow, having all lanes of traffic converted to lead out of town. Many have criticized this decision, but New Orleans found itself in an impossible situation: the city needs a full 72 hours to fully evacuate, and making reliable intensity forecasts that far in advance is very difficult. We will have to accept New Orleans’ vulnerability to major hurricanes unless tens of billions are spent to upgrade the city’s defenses to category 5 capability. As discussed in yesterday’s post, there is reason to be optimistic that New Orleans’ levee system will withstand Ida’s storm surge: The 7-11′ surge predicted for the city is below the maximum surge that Hurricane Isaac of 2012 brought. Much about the plan to restore power was unclear Tuesday afternoon, but it was widely expected that even if power was restored to hospitals, the Sewerage & Water Board and other critical needs in the city soon, it would take far longer for average residents and businesses to be able to turn on their lights and their air conditioning. |

The crazy thing is that we didn’t get any sort of warning about this. Usually weather reports overhype things to prepare for the worst, but I don’t think anyone thought NY was going to be affected this badly. This is crazy!

I'm seeing the live pictures of this storm right now on CNN on TV. Holy Sh1te. The level of destruction is from Ida right now in some parts of NYC is horrific. It is amazing to see this sight unfold right in front of me on TV. I just read that the NYC Mayor has now declared a state of emergency due to Ida. This stuff is not going to end well. It's going to be hell for people who live in the Northeast of the U.S. It will take a lot of work to get it back to some level of normality.

There was a young woman just speaking on the phone to Don Lemon on CNN. She was saying the basement in her apartment in Queens; NY was ruined water from Ida within 3 to 5 minutes. At 9:30pm local time; it came up her toilet & sewage system so it could get knee high in her own basement. That's just devastating. If anyone else is sharing similar stories online about their experiences with Hurricane Ida. The level of damage that it's going to cause to people's livelihoods, particularly who live in this part of the U.S, is going to be catastrophic.
