Default The Suicide Squad (2021)

Quote:
Various outlets are reporting that David Ayer is set to helm a fantasy-tinged cop drama called Bright, which will star Will Smith and Joel Edgerton. Max Landis wrote the script, which is "set in a world where orcs and fairies live among humans".

That sounds interesting enough - but it's not the big news for us CBMers, as all reports also mention that Ayer would like to fit the movie into his fall schedule before Warner Bros. brings him and Smith back for a Suicide Squad sequel in 2017. A studio making tentative plans to follow up a big superhero (well, supervillian in this case) flick is nothing new of course, but it can also be taken as a sign that Warners are confident in how well the first movie will perform.

Suicide Squad stars Will Smith as Deadshot, Jared Leto as The Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, Adam Beach as Slipknot, and Karen Fukuhara as Katana. The movie hits theaters on August 5.

Hope it does well enough for a sequel. The trailers have been great and I can't wait for the final film.

"Suicide Squad sequel in 2017"

I assume that means filming. No way it actually comes out next year

This seems premature to make this announcement.

Yeah I remember before ASM2 came out, Sony had like 5 sequels and a whole universe lined up. Wonder how that turned out.

While I'm certain the film will do well, I am curious as to see if Warner Bros will drop Ayer after the critical beating Suicide Squad has endured. While the early reports indicated they planned to bring them back, I could see them trying to bring in a fresh face at this point.

I hope they don't replace him. WB need to back the f*** off and let the director's keep their vision. If they were to drop him for a sequel it would just be them shamelessly using him as a scapegoat.

People are fooling themselves if they think the theatrical edit of BvS was all Snyder and not producers/execs coming in making those terrible edits.

I'm really hoping WB lets Patty Jenkins do her thing with the Wonder Woman movie and doesn't try to interfere.

Suicide Squad 2 is already rated rotten on rotten tomatoes.

I don't know if majority of the film's faults, however there may be, should fall on Ayer to be honest. He's partly responsible, yes. But judging by what we've seen happen with BvS, I'd say we wait it out and give Ayer the benefit of the doubt until we've seen all the deleted scenes down the line on home video. If the editing in the theatrical cut is a mess, then the re-shoots could've played a hand in the film's finished product.

With the current reviews of the first movie, I highly doubt a sequel will be greenlight.

Granted, it is not released until tomorrow so only time will tell how Suicide Squad will do and if it merits a sequel.

Different sides of the coin, ones a big budget summer blockbuster, Sharknado is an ironically bad TV movie with way less reviews, and I ****ing hate Sharknado.

Almost everyone who watches that movie enjoys it, hence the good reviews! Amazing, huh?

Everyone who watches Sharknado knows what type of movie it is and the genre it encompasses. Sharknado accomplishes what it sets out to do and the critics understand that.

Everyone had high expectations for Suicide Squad and when it turns out to be a total piece of shit, don't be surprised that it's getting unfavourable reviews. Everything I've seen and read about this stinking turd reeks of cookie cutter, generic, superhero nonsense and I'm sure the reviewers listed on Rotten Tomatoes feel the same way.

Which is sad, because between great releases like The Matrix trilogy and Watchmen, I always thought WB was good at giving directors some slack. I guess the DCU turned them all into a bunch of tightwads.

The thing with Ayer is this - a lot of reviews are criticizing the writing (3rd act, villains, etc.), so then that's on Ayer to a large degree, even if it's because of time constraints (see the Collider response for example).
