Epix has picked up a 10-episode straight to series order of Pennyworth, a show set in the Batman universe focusing on the origin story of Bruce Wayne's butler/friend Alfred Pennyworth.

WB is basically throwing things and seeing what will stick. They need to take a break for about 5 years from making DC movies and use that time to plan out their universe cause they are all over the place and these shows are ruining origin story’s we already have.

Just heard this (old) news! Very hyped for this! More Batman-related-stuff is better than no Batman-stuff at all! I love the Gotham TV-Show. Sure, they are screwing with the origins, and that's what makes it fun. For once, we can be surprised on how these characters became want they meant to be, with lots of twists.
Anyway, I've read most of the Batman comics (even the weird stand-alone or limited series, or the Golden/Silver/Bronze Age stories), and I can say that most (if not all) villains and heroes got their Origin retconed and retold at least once over the years. I built a pretty huge Batman Timeline (that I stopped in 2012) and it was a mess when dealing with the old vs new origin stories that were canon to Earth-Two post Crisis on Infinite Earths. So, a fresh take on Alfred set in the past is really interesting! I read that they are using Batman: Earth-One as the basis, and that was a great story. Anyway, I'm on board with this! |

He does seem to be an underused character considering the variety of skills he has beyond being a butler. Would have been an interesting sidekick to Batman if given the chance.

I'm not sure how this will be handled, but the problem with these "prequel" shows (i.e. Smallville and Gotham), while I've enjoyed them to some extent or another, is that they ultimately reply far too much upon the mythos of those characters (i.e. villains emerging, events happening) that should not even occur until well after they've taken on their super hero personas.
Somehow I anticipate young Alfred and Thomas Wayne to encounter and deal with villains from the Batman rogues gallery. I don't know what else they can do with it. |

I laughed and groaned out loud when I heard this was being produced. I’m done with prequel shows. DC is terrible about this. They have so many good characters besides Superman and Batman...yet they keep beating the same two horses. I could care less about Alfred, especially set in the 1960s with no connection to Bruce Wayne.
