United Kingdom Top of the Pops (music programme)

Tonight's Top of the Pops: 1983 repeat on BBC Four was first shown on the BBC on Wednesday 8th June, 1983 (instead of being in it's usual Thursday evening timeslot). The longer version is on at 1 am. On this edition the song which was at No.1 was there for a second week, having knocked New Edition off the top spot the week before (who had been at No.1 for one week, having knocked Spandau Ballet off the top spot after being at No.1 for four weeks with True (a classic, in my opinion).

Tomorrow night's repeat on BBC Four is from Thursday 23rd June, 1983, and next week the editions being shown are from 30th June and 7th July, 1983.

Not sure when it'll be, but later on in the Top of the Pops: 1983 repeat run, is the Smiths' debut on the programme.

Edited the starter post because I realised late last night that the song which knocked New Edition off the top spot, was the new No.1 song on the 2nd June, 1983 edition of Top of the Pops, which BBC Four couldn't show.

I can actually remember the 1983 TOTP as I was 8 at the time. I mostly remember the chart countdown music, do you know what it is called? It's a synth tune that they use when they are counting down the chart numbers.

In July, 1981 the show's theme tune was changed to Yellow Pearl by Phil Lynott (new titles debuted as well). A variation of the new theme tune was used over the chart rundown/countdown.

On the 1,000th edition of Top of the Pops, a shortened version of the titles debuted (there was a variation on the chart rundown/countdown as well). As BBC Four couldn't show that edition (it originally aired on 5th May, 1983), the first edition they could show with the updated titles and chart rundown/countdown was the 12th May, 1983 edition.

In April, 1986 the show's theme tune was changed to The Wizard by Paul Hardcastle and there were new titles.

Two editions on BBC Four next week, from 14th July and 28th July, 1983.

Once I've got my radio/CD player sorted out (the sound crackles on the speakers), I'll be able to play some CDs again. After seeing them on the show, I've thought about getting an album by The Passions and a greatest hits album by The Mobiles and Shakatak.

Last week the 20th October and 3rd November, 1983 editions were shown on BBC Four. This week, the 10th and 24th November editions are being shown. Next week the 8th and 15th December editions will be shown, so hopefully in early June BBC Four will be showing a documentary (and Big Hits compilation programme) about the show in 1984.

Oh, and The Smiths are on the 24th November, 1983 edition.

You've got a couple more double bills to go before you reach the documentary and Big Hits compilation programme. This Thursday night the special 20th anniversary edition from 5th January, 1984 will be shown, then on Friday the 12th January edition is being shown. No editions are being shown next week.

81-87/88 Were my golden years of watching TOTP. Sadly coming to the end of that period in BBC4's reruns.

Yep, the same time period as myself. These BBC4 reruns have been really enjoyable with great music from that decade.

The editions from 1987 being shown on BBC Four this week and next are from April and May. There will be a whole month's worth of editions in a row which will be skipped by the channel later this year (two editions were presented and two editions were co-presented by the late Mike Smith). Hopefully by this summer the repeats will move into 1988 (with the usual The Story of... documentary and Big Hits compilation programme).

I watch the repeats hoping that somehow Ultravox will get to No.1 with 'Vienna' and Joe Dolce's 'Shaddap You Face' was in fact just a bad dream...

But every loser wins, Geoff.

Pity.

Is it the BBC's choice to honour Mike Smith's wish to not repeat his episodes? Or are they bound to something? What's up with that?

Only BBC response I've ever seen:

Quote:
Thanks for getting in touch about Top of the Pops.

While he was alive, Mike Smith decided not to sign the licence extension that would allow the BBC to repeat the Top of the Pops episodes that he presented. Since his passing, the BBC is continuing to respect his wishes.

I hope this clarifies the situation for you.

Best wishes,

Richard Carey

This week and next, all the editions from June 1987 are being shown on BBC Four (the edition on this Thursday evening, the 5th June, 1987 edition, based on the day it was originally shown on the BBC, was originally shown on a Friday instead of a Thursday).
