Default Planet Earth is the only HD DVD outselling BD - we need to buy more copies of PE!

This is an excerpt from the TWICE interview with Warner's Home Video president Ron Sanders. You can read more @ http://www.twice.com/article/CA6477849.html

The movie 300 sold more on BLURAY than HDDVD
The Planet Earth BBC series sold more on HDDVD than Bluray (WTF??)

We need to fix this ASAP guys, by year end we need to spread the word and help generate more WARNER BD sales, and better yet generate a lot more PLANET EARTH BD sales, so that by year end PLANET EARTH has better numbers on BD than HDDVD. Here is the excerpt....

TWICE: Do you actively encourage retail accounts to stock both formats?

Sanders: We do. There are no special incentives to support both but they will chase the consumer, and the consumer wants both. In software, new release titles are selling around 2-to-1, Blu-ray to HD DVD. But it varies by any given title. On “Planet Earth” we sold more HD DVD than Blu-ray and on “300” we sold more Blu-ray than HD. It’s probably two-thirds to one-third, but you’re going to give up a third of that. We’re about returning the best profit on the asset of a film, and it’s hard to give that up. So, let’s see where it all plays out.

We also need to take care of that 1/3rd thats making Warner hang on to HDDVD (See underlined green text above). Lets make it 3/4th and 1/4th this Christmas! Better yet, 4/5th to 1/5th!, I can go on, I am pretty good at match :P

ANYONE WHO HAS NOT PURCHASED PLANET EARTH ON BD - NEEDS TO GO BUY IT ASAP (If you got some cash to spare ofcourse )

BUY PLANET EARTH ON BLURAY! Tell all your BD friends to buy it if they dont have it yet! If you have it, then bring your BD and Non-BD friends over to see the magiv of PLANET EART ON BD!

If anything it proves that the HD DVD user tends to be more the gadget hound with way too much disposible income.

The used market will be awash in Planet Earth a year from now, because a solid 60-70% had no interest in the material and was buying it purely for HD porn

This shows that a lot of the blu ray owners are also ps3 users, and that demographic doesnt care about documentaries as much as movies like 300.

Why flip out because one neutral title outsells BD. Chill out.. do you really concern your day with these small details?

I resent that comment. I am a PS3 owner and I happen to like documentaries very much. Documentares will never achieve the popularity of movies like 300, but that has nothing to do with the PS3 specifically.

I already own it. I think a lot of those copies were sold back when HD-DVD was doing a little better in software sales.

This is one of those titles I have been putting off buying. I just bought Relentless Enemies, and was impressed, so I figure I will go ahead and throw down the $70 for PE.

I just purchased planet earth on BD two days ago. Waiting for it in the mail. Can't wait to watch, I heard it took 5 years to make. How's the PQ anyone?

According to several people on this forum the PQ is the one of the best of the HD movies to date. Which is why I decided to buy it.

The probable reason that one title sold better on hd-dud was that it was their version of a buy-a-thon. Wait 'till they see ours.

Quite frankly, I was disappointed in the Blu-Ray version of the BBC Planet Earth series. It was the first one I had purchased along with my new Samsung HDTV and my Sony BDP-300. At the time I was unaware that there were some issues with the VC-1 Encoding that Warner uses on their Blu-Ray disc release. So I get home and set up my new HDTV system and go to start watching and then from time to time I get this white pulsing static in the picture during certain scenes throughtout the series.

Then, I get the 300 disc, also from Warner and in VC-1 coding, and it too has this white pulsing static in some scenes.

Kind of disappointing considering how much I spent to get this HDTV and all.

Now with all of this hoopla about Parmount/Dreamworks support HD-DVD format and those hoping that we need to have Warner support Blu-Ray format only, well I'm not for that. Apparently Warner uses the VC-1 Encoding so that it can easily encode both HD-DVDs and Blu-Ray discs. To me this means that Warner is not fully utilizing the full capabilities of the Blu-Ray format - so until I do, I will not buy any more disc with VC-1 Encoding.

Also seems to me that not many of the studios are supporting Blu-Ray to its full capablilties. I hear that Sony (the Blu-Ray initiator) is releasing Spider Man 3 on Blu-Ray but without any additonal features (is this true?). So not even Sony seems to fully support their own format. Then there are others - such as Die Hard 4 Blu-Ray being released on Blu-Ray in the PG13 version only.

To me, I get the idea that none of the studios want the Blu-Ray format to win out - probably because they are not interested in the up front tooling cost they will need to do to convert fully to Blu-Ray as opposed to not spending as much to go with the HD-DVD format - even though it is not as fully capable, but still gives that Hi Def picture.

Maybe I should have waited a little longer before buying the Blu-Ray player.

Just my 2 cents.....

One of the reasons why Planet Earth on HD-DVD is outselling Planet Earth BD, is because of their commercial on the Discovery Channel. They play the Planet Earth commercial all the time on Discovery. The commercial says that it is available on DVD or if you want a better experience you can see it in Hi-Def. It then shows a copy of the movie on HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. Most people seeing this does not know what Blu-Ray is so they order the HD-DVD. They probably don't even realize that you need a Hi-Def player to view the movies. Oh well, guess they’re stuck with a crappy disc or have to buy a Tocrapa player....

Firstly, I haven't noticed any of this pulsing white static you are talking about. I have 300 on Blu and it looks pretty damn great to me.

Secondly, the issues about not achieving the Blu-ray players potential are not localized to Blu-ray. HD movies are still in relative infancy and as time goes by you'll see more and more developers taking advantage of the hardware and software capabilities of both formats. A good example is the PiP coming in Hairspray and the new features of Memoirs of a Geisha.

I bought Relentless Enemies as well and my wife and I really like it.

The PQ of Planet Earth on Blu-ray (original BBC version at least) is amazing. I have not noticed any problems like the other person mentioned with my copy and setup.

Actually "Planet Earth" was the first reason for me to by a BD player ... nature documentaries are THE way to use HDTV ... I really don't need that for TV comedy series or old movies ...

... alas, not available in Europe ... re-release 22th of October here at Amazon.co.uk
