Great news - TCC is really knocking it out of the park with these latest announcements. Fantastic. The PQ on the regular Old Joy DVD was never that great - especially given the great natural scenery that was the focal point of the film. So, it will be nice to get this HD upgrade.
Re: the film itself, I've seen it numerous times over the years. And, it is extremely relatable to me - as I'm sure it is to others as well. I.e., the idea of drifting away from former friends as you have more responsibilities than in the past (family/children, career, etc.) is completely understandable....and is a natural, unavoidable part of growing older. Judging from the review screenshots, the transfer looks a bit odd. Almost looks like there's a lot of scanner noise in there that shouldn't be there. Those high frequency patterns (e.g. in the clouds of screenshots 5, 8, or 11) certainly don't look like 16mm grain to me.
EDIT: In motion, it looks actually quite OK and natural; better than what the screenshots implied. Last edited by kmhofmann; 03-26-2020 at 03:09 PM. |

I've already ordered this and am looking forward to it! In the meantime, I have a question.
The review on this site lists the Criterion Blu-ray as having an aspect ratio of 1.86:1, though I've seen it listed as 1.78:1 everywhere else. Can anyone say which is correct? I believe the old Kino DVD was in 1.85 OAR. If indeed it was changed for the Blu-ray release, I wonder what the reasoning might have been behind that. |

I am confused by the review at this link:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Old-J...252891/#Review The ratings are (deservedly) high for Video, Audio, and Supplements, and then suddenly the overall rating is 2.5/5? Is this based on the reviewer's feeling about the film itself? My understanding is that this site is meant to review the *quality* of the release, not a judgment of the content. The 2.5 rating generates an auto-statement about the Criterion release indicating it is poor, when most (including the reviewer) clearly believe it is the opposite of that. |

Will Oldham. Great at playing lonely weirdos and child preachers.
