Default RoboCop Returns

Source: Deadline

Quote:
New 'Robocop' Movie on the Way, Neill Blomkamp Directing

EXCLUSIVE: MGM is developing a new installment of RoboCop and has set District 9 director Neill Blomkamp to helm the picture, which is titled RoboCop Returns. The studio hopes to revive a franchise that began with the Paul Verhoeven-directed satirical sci-fi action thriller that Orion released in 1987. Original writers Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner are producing and exec producing, respectively. Justin Rhodes, who co-wrote the Terminator film that Tim Miller is shooting, will rewrite the script that Neumeier and Miner wrote years ago as a planned sequel to Verhoeven’s hit, an installment that never happened. That duo is creatively involved in moving forward their creation for the first time since the original.

So what Blomkamp was hoping to do for the Alien films he is now going to do for the Robocop franchise? If they can at least get Weller back I'll give this a shot.

Interesting that it's the originally planned RoboCop film, and Chappie had some fun RoboCop-esque moments. But I'm really unbothered by the fact I'd never see another RoboCop film, and really Blomkamp seems a bit more interesting doing something else, the two properties have a very distinctive brand of 'blunt' and the two don't seem too similar.

Not sure i feel happy about this. Robocop is a cult classic and making a modern direct sequel is akin to trying to do what Terminator Genisys did imo. Not sure this will also work with the modern Robocop movie they did. Might seem too soon to do another reboot type sequel.

How old was Stallone in Rocky Balboa or Harrison Ford in Force Awakens? I feel like you could do this with wide shots of doubles but close-ups and the occasional medium shot with Weller, the same way modern superhero movies often rely on doubles for massive stunts scenes the same could be done here. I mean considering most of the time you only see the bottom half of his head.

Part of where 3 and the TV series lost me was it was missing that magic Weller brought to the character, if we are going to go the route of a Superman Returns, and we could get back the original actor I'd rather go that route rather than a Brandon Routh type (or I guess for Robocop, Robert John Burke) and just have him age as a character (assuming the rewrite allows it).

I love Blomkamp and RoboCop. Ironically, his only film that I didn’t like was the RoboCop inspired one. I hope he can pull it off. At least it’ll have gorgeous production design and won’t pull any punches like the PG-13 remake (which I didn’t totally dislike).

It may well be set in some kind of alternate future reality, that’s a continuation of the original Robocop film, and not an exact reflection of our modern world. But it can still satirise aspects of our current reality, in the larger than life world depicted in the film itself.

They could do a CG Peter Weller mouth/chin over another actor’s mouth/chin playing Robocop, if they manage to get him back for the voice. I can’t wait!

If it's the same Robocop, it has to feature Peter Weller. Watch them give it to some doofus like Alden Ehrenreich, though.

Your last point, that may work to give the idea of Weller. The only problem is robocop2 is a direct sequel to 1. I would rather it be a off of p2. Only if they got Weller or did cgi voodoo. And I hope it would be better than the justice league mustash.

Weller's age has nothing to do with it. He just wants no part of Robocop anymore. He won't even do interviews for documentaries about it because he said he's done with it.

...but if they DID want to use him and he actually agreed, it could easily be done with a CG de-aged face and another actor's body in the robot (or CG) body.
... Or NOT de-aged. I mean wouldnt the organic parts of him still age?

I don't see any need for this film to knock 2 out of continuity, only 3. Unlike 3, not enough happened in 2 for me to imagine it derailing or altering the plans for this film's continuity. By calling it "Robocop Returns" rather than Robocop 2, you could just as easily assume the second film still happened unless they said otherwise or even have an easter egg alluding to Caine or the Nuke drug craze of the time.

It sounds like they’re going to disregard Robocop 2, but TBH, it probably won’t matter too much, as it doesn’t really move the story forward from the first film at all, it’s just more of the same really. So you might still be able to watch it, in between 1 and this new film, without screwing with continuity too much.
