Default Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret. (2023)

I really enjoyed this movie a lot! For me, the key selling point is that Rachel McAdams is in it, but there's a lot to this movie that folks might like. And for parents, especially, this should be a delight to watch with your younger daughters.

The film is set in 1970, and the attention to period detail is very thorough. Check out the old-time soda cans, looking like they're brand-new! Those old printed catalogs people used to shop from!

But above all, the movie features a very charming lead performance from Abby Ryder Fortson, who effortlessly carries the movie on her shoulders. I really look forward to any future projects she stars in.

If there's one downside to the movie is that it gives a bit too much screen time to what the adults are doing; a subplot about McAdams' difficulties settling in to her new home and new town are nice, but they were not really absolutely needed. We've seen a lot of scenes like those in other movies.

If you have a young daughter or granddaughter, definitely consider watching this movie with them, it will probably be a very rewarding experience.

I never got the joke in Deadpool until I looked it up.

I loved Judy Blume’s “Fudge” books as a kid: Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Fudge, Super Fudge, Fudge-a-Mania, etc. Freckle Juice was good as well.

I didn’t read ‘Are You There God’, because I assumed it was primarily relatable for girls. I’ll check the movie when I get a chance.

I haven't read any of the books, but I certainly think boys would stand to benefit from learning a little bit more about all the stuff girls go through growing up!

I definitely remember this book as a kid, though I never read it because I was/am a boy/man (he/him) - maybe I will check this out on streaming one day.

Usually down for a good chick flick, but this seems like it plays it very safe, and just...the subject of girl becoming a woman honestly doesn't have me running to the cinema.

There's more to this movie than just the first menstruation, actually

‘Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret’ Director Kelly Fremon Craig on the Pressures of Adapting Judy Blume: It Felt ‘Like Painting Over a Picasso’

Quote:
Now in her eighties, legendary children’s author Judy Blume only recently became keen to the idea of adapting her books for the screen. But when it came to “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” — arguably Blume’s most famous title — her arms were crossed. She didn’t want any filmmaker to touch it.

“And then I got this letter from Kelly,” Blume told Variety, smiling, in a cover story for March’s Power of Women issue. She’s referring to “The Edge of Seventeen” writer-director Kelly Fremon Craig, to whom she eventually granted the screen rights. Blume was convinced for three reasons: the beauty of the letter that Fremon Craig wrote her, the fact that James L. Brooks mentored Fremon Craig and would serve as a producer on the film, and most importantly, the fact that Fremon Craig was the first person to pursue the rights whose work Blume had previously seen. Within a week of the letter, Fremon Craig and Brooks flew to Key West, Fla. to make an in-person plea to Blume; the rest is history. “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” hit theaters via Lionsgate on April 28.

Blume makes a split-second cameo in the film. Whose idea was that?

From the very beginning, I really, really wanted to stick her in there somewhere. But it’s delicate, because you can do a cameo that can take people out of the story. So it was about finding a way to slide her in where you could almost miss it, unless you’re a Judy Blume superfan. But that 10,000-watt smile is just so great.
