Default Onkyo HT-SR800

Is the Onkyo HT-SR800 any good. I would like to upgrade my surround sound but would prefer an all in one unit that is 7.1. I was looking at the 605, i thought i saw an all in one unit for this but apparently i was seeing things because i can no longer find it. I have the Panasonic DMP-BD30, i'm not sure if i can decode thru this or not, i'm pretty clueless.

The Onkyo HT-SP908 (Onkyo TX-SR605 + Speakers) is the Onkyo you were thinking of.

The HT-SR800 cannot process HDMI audio, you would need an optical cable and in my oppinion, not worth the hastle and money:

"HDMI Inputs/Output: This unit has 2 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI monitor output. The HDMI inputs are assignable to different input sources. The monitor output sends the HDMI signal to your display just as it's received (pass-through), but the receiver cannot decode the audio signal via the HDMI input so a separate optical digital, coaxial digital, or analog stereo cable must also be used.

Default Sr800

I have had this system for about two months now and love it. Where can you get a 7.1 system for under $500 dollars. The SR800 gives you plenty of different audio options when viewing a movie,DTS-ES Discrete/Matrix, DTS Neo:6, DTS 96/24, Dolby Digital EX and Dolby Pro Logic IIx decoding. Plus hdmi pass through, saving then need of going direct to your tv. Not really sure of the specs on your player, but I have my upscale dvd player and PS3 running theough the reciever and they both sound great.

I've got the onkyo sr800 and personally i like it. For the price its probobly one of the best systems you can buy right now for HTIB. You wont be able to get the true HD audio though which i wish i would have looked at. I got tricked when i looked at the package and saw HDMI inputs and figured it was the way to go, but its only a pass through, which is really lame. Other then that i am still pleased with the system, its got alot of punch to it and like i said for the price its one sweet deal.

Bottom line, if you want a good system on a budget this is the one to buy, if you want to take advantage of the HD audio that blu-ray is really capable of, go with the 605 or 805 depending on your budget.

Its pretty good. My friend bought this model after I bought my HT System. He bought is at HH Gregg and paid $750.00 for a $999.00 system. He caught HH Gregg on a slow Sunday.

I have this system. You should have gotten the Panasonic 10AK because its the ONLY Blu-ray player with 7.1 analog outputs, so you'll be able to get TrueHD, 7.1 ch PCM, DTS-HD, and the rest of the goodies WITHOUT HDMI!

Crackin' is correct since you bought the Panasonic BD30. If you bought the Panasonic 10AK, then that surround would work perfectly and you'd get any combination of audio codecs thru 7.1 analog inputs/outputs. The Panasonic BD30 DOES NOT decode audio at all. You will need to buy a receiver that can process audio thru HDMI in order for it to work properly.

I don't believe it will work properly without an HDMI capable receiver. Your receiver wouldn't decode thru the analog input/outputs but would accept PCM tracks. So, you would have to connect via optical or get a different receiver.

If I were you, I would keep the Panasonic that you have now, or get a different receiver.

Okay, while we're on the subject I have a quick question. Right now I have all my components(PS-3, HD-DVR, DVD) hooked up to my TV(Hitatchi 50" plasma FS) via HDMI cables, and one optical cable on the output of my TV plugged into my Onkyo receiver. (I have the same HT-SR800 HTIB) It sounds great, but is this set up best? Or would I be better off running seperate optical cables from my components directly to the receiver? Seem's to me that'd be a waste of money, but if it would improve my sound quality even more I'm game!! Also, the sub cable that comes with the system is pretty skimpy, would it be worth it to get a "real" one? I would appreciate any info you guys could give me. Thanks-

Yeah..... don't run an audio cable from the tv to the receiver. You're only getting 2 channel audio, thats all most tv's are capable of.

You want to buy those extra cables and run them directly from the PS3 to the receiver and from the cable box to the receiver. Your DVD player can go someplace else since your PS3 plays DVDs.

Check monoprice.com for the cables. Don't buy those over rated Monster cables.

That receiver cannot decode audio thru HDMI. Thats why it says "HDMI PASS-THROUGH" on the front. You will need an optical cable from the PS3 to the receiver in order to get audio.

Thanks man!! I bought & installed my cables this weekend, what a difference!!! I thought I was getting true surround but it was just the receiver converting the 2 channel audio into half-ass surround. Thanks for the info I really appreciate it.

well if your still interested in the htsr800 I say don't get it. I got it loved it but left me wondering about everything I'm missing. So did some research and ended up buying a sr705 and about $1800 worth of speakers and man there is a world of difference.

Yeah true but the point I'm making is that with the htsr800 you'll always wonder what the newer format sound like and if it's worth upgrading you system (well if your like me anyways). I say get that package with the sr605 at least.
