Grave of the Fireflies Blu-ray Review
The Ghibli Blog and ToonZone.net reported today that Sentai Filmworks has acquired the rights to release Studio Ghibli's 1988 film Grave of the Fireflies on Blu-ray in North America! ![]() Release date: 11/20/12 Sentai Filmworks previously acquired the DVD rights to the film and released a new DVD edition (shown above) on 3/6/12. The previous DVD edition by Central Park Media had long been out of print in North America. I'll keep an eye out for new information and update this thread as soon as I hear anything else! ![]() Last edited by Scottie; 11-11-2017 at 11:08 PM. |

I look forward to getting my heart torn out and sobbing hysterically.

I haven't seen this film but several members have said it is the saddest film they have ever seen. I've put it on my rental list, but how often would one want to watch a film about starving wartime orphans? I'm sure it's brilliant, but I'm rather dreading watching it!

I will watch it again (in HD! thanks, Mifune) and cry beautiful, HD tears upon my dish rag. |

You'll be in tears at the end, but Grave of the Fireflies is a must-see. If there is one movie that demonstrates how powerful movies can be, this is it.

I've seen it once but I want to own the BD sometime. Not one that I will watch regularly but it is a great movie that should have a place in my collection. Sometimes you just need to watch something heartbreaking to realize that you're an idiot for complaining about stuff in your life - its just human nature..

Rumors are pointing to November, but I don't think anything has been confirmed yet.

If you're talking about special features, though, I suspect you (and I) will be disappointed. The DVD included hardly any. Regardless, I'm all over this. I only saw it once, years ago, so I'm looking forward to revisiting it in all its glory. Too bad my wife refuses to watch with me. ![]() |

1. Keep two boxes of tissues by your side. Don't buy the cheap ones, though, your nose will get red and raw. 2. Put someone you trust on speed dial and keep the phone beside you at all times. 3. Find a thick, comforting pillow to hug and that will keep you warm as your faith in humanity slowly drains from your soul. 4. If you insist on snacking during the film, limit yourself to a loaf of cheap bread and warm water. 5. Forget/lower your expectations and just watch it for what it is. 6. Enjoy it. It's a wonderful film. Yes, it is tragically sad but its humanity is its strength; in fact, the more painful it gets (if the film works for you and it may not) the more inspiring I think it becomes. There are wonderful moments of joy in it and it is rare to actually feel so deeply for animated characters. 7. Afterwards, read Ebert's column on the film or maybe check out Filmspotting's podcast segment of the film (on their all-time top five "one-timers"). Think of it as group therapy ![]() My copy won't be here for a week or two. Frankly, I can't wait for it to resurrect my lump-of-coal heart to a fully functioning one. |

MJW, it never occurred to me to even look up Wikipedia's page so thank you because I wouldn't have discovered there was a live action version (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grave_o...action_version). While I'm not too pressed to see it, it provides an interesting contrast in approaching the material.
Back to the dub, I'm curious how the new one will compare with the original. I haven't had the DVD for ages (a casualty of too much lending), so I don't recall much about the original dub except a vague sense that it was shrill. When my new copy arrives in the coming weeks I will listen to the Japanese but when/if showing it to friends I'll use the dub since *sigh* you know. |
