This might have been posted if so im sorry but since when has the PS3's fan been loud im 10ft from the thing and can't hear a thing. If people are comparing it to the 360 then they have to be deaf then. Im just wondering whats with the new more sillent ps3?

The PS3 fan is a lot quieter then the 460 fan. And the new 40GB PS3 doesn't use as much power so it doesn't generate as much heat thus the fan doesn't run as hard.
I have the 60GB model and I never found the fan to be loud, but I have my speakers pretty loud usually. I can only hear it if I turn everything down and then pay attention to it. |

My 80gb PS3 fan seems to spin up for the oddest reasons. Like when it's playing a Blu-ray movie, there's no processor activity going on (or very little), but sometimes that sucker can get kinda loud. Yet when I'm playing The Orange Box, it's whisper-quiet. Can't figure it out.

I can only hear my 80 if I'm trying to and I can't hear my 40 no matter how hard I try. I have the newest 360(the Halo 3 edition)and I have to turn my surround up a bit more than normal for it not to be distracting.

I have an 60 gig PS3 and I hardly ever hear it, of course if I have the 360 on too, that completely drowns it out. I listen to my movies loud, so the sound from either the PS3 or the 360 are really inconsequential to me anyway. I don't hear anything but the movie when it is that loud.

people's ears are different... some people can hear things other people can't. I'd be bummed if I was Superman and can't turn super hearing off, then everything would be loud. that said, I can hear my 60G's fan because I have a musician's ear and I was a sound tech for a while. If I wasn't, I probably wouldn't notice it because it's really that quiet. It's not silent, it's just quiet.

Mine is only loud if I keep Folding for many weeks straight.
Usually turning it off and puts a stop to that. I remember the dreamcast that sucker was loud it was like a 747 taking off in my room, my buddy brought it over told him my tv could not exceed the volume of his dreamcast do to physical limitations of my tv and surrounding materials. |

I have a 60g PS3 and a 20g 360, I am still amazed to this day at how quiet my ps3 is . The 360 on the other hand is honestly just annoyingly loud, like a jet engine taking off. My ps3 does seem to get quite warm though , thinking of buying intercooler soon.
