USA Gregory's Girl (1981) - January 21, 2020

Bill Forsyth's Gregory's Girl (1981) will be releasing on Blu-ray on January 21st, 2020, courtesy of Film Movement.

Quote:
Special Features and Technical Specs:
  • 2K RESTORATION OF THE FILM
  • Audio Commentary with director Bill Forsyth and film critic Mark Kermode
  • Bill Forsyth on Gregory's Girl - interview
  • Bill Forsyth: The Early Years - interview
  • Gregory's Girl Memories with Clare Grogan interview
  • Booklet with new essay by film scholar Jonathan Murray
Quote:
Synopsis: Sixteen year old Gregory is an awkward, gangly Scottish lad who is in the midst of the throngs of puberty. The object of his affection is Dorothy, despite or in part because she is a talented striker who took his place on the school's boys' football team, he now demoted to distracted goalkeeper. Gregory tries to insinuate himself as much as possible in her life through her interests, such as learning the Italian language, without ever directly coming out and telling her that he likes her. Gregory's male friends are of no help in advising him on how to get into a relationship with Dorothy. The only person with whom he confides that provides any constructive advice is his ten-year old sister, Madeline. When Gregory finally gets the nerve to ask Dorothy out on a date, the outcome of the question is not quite what he expects. He learns that Dorothy talks to her girlfriends about such issues as much as Gregory does with his friends, each side strategizing to their own desired end.

Was this licensed from MGM (who obtained US distribution rights from the Orion ownership of Samuel Goldwyn Company)? If so, this might be the first of MGM titles we'll see from them, as KL Insider said a while back they tried to get this title but found out it was with another label.

OTOH, trailer footage looks like it will be the same transfer as the UK Second Sight BD (as Film Movement doesn't do restorations themselves and utilize whatever masters the rights holder has).

I was going to ask about the source. Guess I'll just look up reviews of the Second Sight release. This would be my first Film Movement purchase, so I don't have much to go by. I'm also interested in the Ealing comedies that they have.

Film Movmenet has quite a nice range, and I see them being an even more prominent label gong forward.

Some of their more notable releases:

Fritz Lang's Indian Epic (upcoming)
John Woo's Heroes Shed No Tears
All About Lily Cho-Chou
The Great Silence
King Hu's The Fate of Lee Khan (also Raining in the Mountain
upcoming)
The Reflecting Skin

They also have Peter Seller's directorial debut film Mr Topaze, which is very likely to be released on BD next year.

Also, this is very clearly not the same transfer as the Second Sight release. A quick look at the trailer, and comparison to the UK BD screenshots shows as much. It's much improved in color, and detail, and that's just based on the compressed youtube trailer too, so it'll be even better on BD.

I love Film Movement. Every release I've bought from them has been top quality. (Violent Cop, Boiling Point, Hana-bi, Outrage Coda, the Great Silence, All About Lily Cho-Chou, and Heroes Shed No Tears) They don't release a lot, but again truly quality releases.

I absolutely love this film. Hopefully the upcoming Blu-ray turns out to be the superior release.

Also It seems like it's a new 2K restoration.

In this episode, Film Forum Presents Bill Forsyth, the Scottish director of modern comedy classics including LOCAL HERO, COMFORT AND JOY, HOUSEKEEPING, and his beloved 1981 film GREGORY’S GIRL. Mr. Forsyth, in a rare trip to New York, sat down for a conversation with Film Forum Repertory Director Bruce Goldstein on Friday, October 4th, immediately following the opening night screening of a new restoration of GREGORY’S GIRL.

GREGORY’S GIRL runs at Film Forum through Thursday, October 10th.

Second Sight BD had possibly the worst compression I've seen, second to Shout's Audition BD. Film Movement's BD should be an improvement considering the restoration looks different that the SS one.

Okey Dokey, so I had emailed Film Movement (via their general inquires address) questions about the transfer. The rep said they are using the same Pinewood restoration as the UK disc, but with the Pinewood "restored in 2013" screen + BBFC card and ITC film Distributors logo unfortunately removed. The color timing looked darker in the trailer due to the underlying master having different gamma levels from their own encode.

Made in the town where I grew up. I've had a brown coffee in Crollas, waited by the big clock and eaten chips in that phone-box.

May take a flyer on this. Local Hero was one of my favorite blind buys this year.

You're from Cumbernauld? I used to live in East Kilbride. Watching Gregory's Girl reminds me of EK as they both look similar being New Towns.

I believe they are both twin-towns with Limbo.

Got mine in this past Friday, watched it that night. Looked good to me. Grain is there, but not overwhelmingly so. Along with a French dub, it has a choice of the original theatrical audio or an alternate US sdtk which I was unaware of there having been one.

Mine's arriving today and will be fired up in the HT shortly after arrival. Really love this film. Here is a nice review. Interesting that there seems to be no mention of the sequel, Gregory's Two Girls, which I've never seen let alone even knew existed until few years ago. https://trailersfromhell.com/gregorys-girl/

I wonder how the PQ of this release compares with the Second Sight.
