Default best home theater in a box between 400 and 500 dollars...

I have a very small tv room and I'm not going to invest a ton of money into an elaborate surround sound system. I just want a decent htib in the 400-500 dollar range. Can anyone give me some suggestions?

Note# If at all possible, try not to recommend systems that come with upconverted dvd players. I already have a PS3 and frankly, I wouldn't use it anyway. Thanks!

Do they have something comperable that's only 5.1 Channel? Given the size and layout of my room, I'm not sure if I could even use the extra 2 speakers.

Yes they do, Onkyo ht-sr700 5.1 htib. It has the same 10" sub (230 watts) that comes in the 800 system. It has no hdmi inputs, 680 total watts and comes with the tx-sr304 receiver. I own this system and it rocks! you can get at Tigerdirect.com for $299.99

The hdmi is just a pass through on the 800 it still will not pass audio, You still have to run a optical or coax to the receiver.

Therefore the HDMI in that receiver is not very usefull unless you don't have enough HDMI inputs on your TV

Or you can do what I did, and buy the 7.1 system and not use the extra two speakers.

Well of course. However I don't want to pay extra for 2 speakers that I won't use. That's why I asked if there was anything comperable. I may end up going that route anyway. I just wanted to avoid it if possible.

I guess basicaly I'm looking for a good 5.1 HTIB system with true HDMI support, no dvd player included, and priced in the 400-500.00 range.

You can still get this unit, just in the set up, pass over the 2 extra speakers. It won't effect your sound. This is a great brand and quality.

I'm like you in the no upconvert DVD department. We're very happy with the Sony Blu Ray Disc Matching Component Home Theater System. It's very comparable to the late Sony Dream System 1000W generations of home theater, except no dvd player, hence it is a component system made for your components. 3 HDMI inputs and one output to HDTV and 5.1. We have our PS3 and cable box hooked up to it and it's pretty nice having everything pass through your sound system and it does sound great. Maybe the third HDMI input will come in handy one day. There are two models to this system, one with tower speakers and the other with small box speakers both exactly within your price range at $400 and $500. Research them for yourself at SonyStyle.com models HT-SF2000 and HT-SS2000

Yea, been trying to post that to you for a couple hours now. I think something was going wrong because I had been trying to attach the link for you but this forum had some complications with it. Sorry, I'm a newbie as you can see. But look up the models under the home theater dropdown and its in the component home theater list link (if you're not already there)
