I was at a pawn shop in the U.S. and they were selling 5 Blu-rays for 10 bucks and I did a blind buy on a French Blu-ray of a Korean film called "The Chaser". I have a region free player and I wasn't worried about it not playing, but when I put it in my machine it just says something like BD and when I click that I get access to some files, but I still have no idea how to play it. This has never happened to me before. It doesn't really seem defective, but I don't know how to get it to work. I do not have my machine hooked up to the internet.

I'm not tech savvy enough to figure that out, but thanks. I used to have a Starship Trooper Blu-ray that wouldn't work until I put in a memory stick in the player, but this seems different. I can't imagine why this would be the only Blu-ray I would have this problem with. I hope nobody makes anymore Blu-rays like this in the future.

You might want to get access to an other Region B compatible player and test the disc in it.
One of our French main BD pressing plant (QOL) had a huge resin issue and many of their discs get unplayable after some years (sometimes even some months). Gaumont, M6, TF1 and Wild Side discs are notably concerned, and The Chaser is from Wild Side, so it could be it. Other pressing plants had similar issues, but in much smaller amount so only a handful of their discs are concerned (for instance, Silent Hill is one of these). |

A lot of US gear can't handle 50 Hz content. The good news is most discs aren't encoded this way. |

1080/50i content is common in Europe as it's our TV format here. A lot of TV on BD from the likes of the BBC is released in this format as it maintains the right speed of original broadcast. The issue you have in US is most hardware manufacturers both TV and of BD players don't want to support it (it's in the kit as Panasonic, Sony etc make global kit it's just disabled on models sold in US) as a deterrent to discourage importing of European content. |

Playback wouldn't start on my EU PS4, due to an error code which I can't remember now. Then I got it working by turning Video Playback Settings> Output at 1080p/24Hz to OFF.
Unfortunately, it's unplayable after 00:35:00. Must be the pressing plant issue described above. |
