Default What's Love Got to Do With It? | Shekhar Kapur

Quote:
Director Shekhar Kapur has been relatively quiet, in terms of feature films, for more than a decade now. The director of the Oscar-nominated features “Elizabeth” and “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” has yet to make another feature since the 2007 release of the latter film. But that’s about to change, as he has signed on to helm a new rom-com, “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” featuring some really great actors.

According to Deadline, “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” is set to be directed by Kapur and will star Lily James, Emma Thompson, and Shazad Latif, who is probably best known for his role in “Star Trek: Discovery.” The exact plot is under wraps but the rom-com is said to take place both in London and South Asia. The feature will be written and produced by Jemima Khan. [+]

If so, the thread wouldn't have been posted on this subforum.

That Tina Turner title will confuse/mislead a lot of people. Guaranteed.

Looks like your traditional Richard Curtis-esque Working Title rom-com with a bit of Bollywood thrown in. Good trailer though, & more Lily James & Emma Thompson can only be a good thing

The UK release date of January 27, 2023 seems like a long way off, but I guess they're aiming for the Valentines crowd...

Default What's Love Got To Do With It? (2023) - Lily James and Emma Thompson

This movie is opening against GotG Vol. 3 and will most likely get lost in the shuffle, but I hope I'll be able to watch it while it is in cinemas as I'm a big fan of both Lily James and Emma Thompson.

Directed by Shekhar Kapur, who did both Elizabeth movies with Cate Blanchett and also Bandit Queen (1994)

I saw this back in March when it came out in the UK. Lily James is awfully charming here and makes it watchable, but the film is poorly edited and paced, and not particularly funny. Just starts off really messy and never recovers from it.

What a coincidence that two romantic comedies are opening the same weekend.

This movie might or might not be one of Kapur's most personal films. I'm not really sure about that, but I would not be the least bit surprised if it encapsulated how he feels about arranged marriages, especially in modern-day society. (If he has said anything about this in interviews, I absolutely do not know, as I didn't feel it necessary to research his take on the subject before watching the movie)

Though this might seem like the usual rom-com, it does go out of its way to pull a bit of a surprise in the third act, though perhaps one that isn't really going to be all that surprising to many, and I suspect it's all kind of Kapur's take on the whole institution and how quaint it may be living in today's world.

So, on the whole, I think this is a pretty good rom-com, especially when it comes to exploring the intercultural issues involved in some mixed marriages, and it is also kind of a delight to see that a lot of the movie takes place in Pakistan.

Lilly James is fine, as always, and Emma Thompson is sadly relegated to "eccentric old lady" stereotypes, but she's so good you probably won't mind very much. Shazad Latif is pretty compelling, as always, and to his credit he pulls off the tricky aspects of hs character much better than a lot of other actors probably would.

If you do watch it, make sure you stay through at least to the mid-credit sequence, it's well worth it!

It did hit BD a decade ago in Australia. It was reissued there earlier this year (just ahead of Disney's exit), and several U.S. sites picked it up including some that normally don't sell imports; I got it for under $20 from ImportCDs (a lesser Direct2U site). Better than this silly title, made even worse by Tina Turner's death between its theatrical & BD releases -- not to mention Angela Bassett's second Oscar nom.
