Default Dudes (1987) (Collector's Edition)

I have been waiting FOREVER for this movie! Already pre-ordered!

Amazon has it currently for $17.25 which is a deal since I pre-ordered at $24.93 at Shout Factory's site.

I will probably have to get it myself, hope there is a Daniel Roebuck & Johnathan Cryer Commentary. Showtime seemed to play this all the time when I first got cable back in the late 80's but I always seemed to miss it or maybe I have watched it and forgot, its just been so long ago.

I remember watching this movie as a kid with my Father and I've wanted to revisit ever since. Definitely day 1 (I'll have to get my Dad a copy as well).

Best thing out of the Shout Select line to bring this to blu. This never had a DVD release. Plus John Cryer, day 1 buy for me. It's been on my wish list for a while.

Only thing I remember about this one is the guy with the mohawk eating dog biscuits.

Dudes is available for cheap now during the Shout Factory Back to School sale. I pre-ordered it last night for $17 and change.

I rented Dudes on VHS back in the day, and remember getting a kick out of it. The main things that stick out in my mind are the "18 and bored" T-shirt that the punk dude (played by Flea) was wearing and one scene where a bull goes absolutely ballistic on some guy at a rodeo.

These long-lost 1980s movies are always so fun to revisit.

EDIT:
Good Lord, I'm looking at the IMDB page right now. I had forgotten that Catherine Mary Stewart stars in this movie.

I just found this soundtrack today in a big box of records that I planned on giving away for free. Good thing I double checked the box because there was some stuff I definitely wanted to keep that I had no idea was in there - Black Flag, Captain Beefheart, KISS, and a bunch of pretty rare punk records that I've collected over the years. I found the FRIGHT NIGHT soundtrack in there as well!

Grant, played by John Cryer (Pretty in Pink), Biscuit, played by Daniel Roebuck (The Fugitive), and Milo, played by Flea (bassist for Red Hot Chili Peppers) are three disenchanted New York City punk rockers who decide to drive across the country in a Volkswagen for a new life in California. When they stop and spend a night sleeping under the stars in the desert landscapes of the American west, however, they are attacked by a group of vicious redneck outlaws led by Lee Ving (lead singer of the punk band, Fear). Grant and Biscuit manage to find a hiding place, but Milo is shot and killed.

After seeking help from apathetic local police, Grant and Biscuit take matters into their own hands by pursuing the rugged outlaws north through old western towns. Grant, who has visions of a mysterious cowboy, goes full-tilt into the wild west ethos by learning to shoot a pistol and dressing up in cowboy gear himself, while Biscuit is visited by Native American spirits during a hallucination and becomes convinced that he himself is a Native American warrior.

Catherine Mary Stewart (Night of the Comet, The Last Starfighter) plays a beautiful tow truck driver who brings out the best in Grant and teaches him to believe in himself. Pete Willcox plays a daredevil Elvis impersonator who also comes to the aid of Grant and Biscuit.

The 1987 film, Dudes, was directed by Penelope Spheeris, who also helmed The Decline of Western Civilization, Suburbia, and Wayne's World. Spheeris had her finger on the pulse of American punk rock and heavy metal of that era, and this strange combination of a western revenge thriller and a teenage coming-of-age comedy exudes that punk spirit in a wonderful way. The opening scene, which takes place in a New York dive where punkers are slam-dancing to “Urban Struggle” by The Vandals, is golden. The soundtrack also features Jane's Addiction, Faster Pussycat, Steve Vai, and The Tail Gators.

Tonight was my first time watching Dudes since I rented it on VHS tape almost 30 years ago, and, as is usual when I revisit these old 1980s standouts from my misspent youth, I am surprised at how much of this movie I still remember by heart. One character's “18 and Bored” T-shirt sticks out in my memory. Another moment that left its mark on my psyche is when a villain is viciously killed by a bull at a rodeo.

Dudes was a weird trip of a movie in so many ways, and it still comes across as endearingly unconventional today, although three decades have passed since its release. It's also a long lost movie, since it fell off the face of the Earth after enjoying minor success at VHS rentals. I love it when forgotten films like this surface again.

There is a fair bit of print damage on this Shout Factory Blu-ray of Dudes, but, for the most part, the movie looks pretty great. The audio comes across well to my ears, and the punk and metal tunes sound quite good.

The lion's roar of this Blu-ray, however, is its present-day interviews with Spheeris, Cryer, Flea, Roebuck, Stewart, and others. Right now, I'm watching Flea and Spheeris reminisce about 1980s punk.

Speaking of lions roar, I wonder if this was licensed from MGM if it bears that lion at the start? Lionsgate appears to own most of the Vista catalog (Russkies is one controled by LG), but some titles such as Lady in White and possibly Fright Night PT: 2 are with MGM because of the Orion catalog which includes 1970s-mid 90s Samuel Goldwyn (who were the international distributors for some Vista Organization titles like Lady).

I never heard of this movie, and wasn't interested when announced. But, after reading the review, and seeing all those great extras, and it has Catherine Mary Stewart. Well, I'm going to have to blind buy this! Hope it's good.

I watched it last night.

It’s got a great soundtrack. Acted well. The blu itself shows some wear on the film but it gives it character.

Flea is awesome here also.

I’m glad I got it. Hope you enjoy it.

I don’t know how I’ve never heard or seen of this movie before now. Recorded on 12/3 TCM. I really enjoyed this movie. 3.5 out of 4. Love Jon Cryers ‘80s work. Still don’t know how this flew under my radar all these years. TCM

Lee Ving made a great villian. I watched this for the first time a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed the straight forward storytelling. It's a coming of age story that smartly blended punk and Western components.

Great, undervalued movie. I've had this Blu-ray since release date; I was a big fan in the VHS days. The interviews are excellent.

Everything I know about this movie is from Keel's "Rock n' Roll Outlaw" video.

I watched Night of the Comet for the first time yesterday and really enjoyed it, especially Catherine Mary Stewart, who I recognized as the cute girl in Keel's video shooting her gun off.

I'd really like to watch this flick, but I'm not about to spend $55 on the bluray. Shucks, I was really hoping to find a budget release of this one.
