Default Rarewave Sale?

I put ? in the title because I didn't see this listed as an official sale, but I am seeing literally 100's of Blurays at about $10 - mainly from BFI
https://www.rarewaves.com/collection...rice-ascending

But also others.
I got all of these for about $10.50 each (including S&H)

I have never seen these this low. OrbitDVD, for example, has some of these going for about twice the price.

and some Carry Ons for $10.50 each

Pretty sure all of the above are Region "B' locked.

Default BFI Flipside Titles

I've participated in past BFI sales and have a decent number of their titles. For the most part I've been quite pleased with them. I've never, however, purchased any of their Flipside discs. The covers have always given me the impression of cheapness and exploitation cinema. Am I wrong? Should I give them a chance? If yes, does anyone have any must-have recommendations? Although my primary interest is 1920 - 1970 narrative film, I am quite open to independent, alternative types. I'm willing to pick-up four or five of them, I just need some guidance. Thanks!

Russ

This isn’t so much a sale as standard practice for Rarewaves (and Base.com which used to ship int’l until Second Sight’s Day of the Dead boxset permanently ended that). The titles fluctuate and rotate over time but often hold their prices for a long time. It’s something like Amazon’s prices for WAC titles (although those fluctuate much more often.)

The Flipside catalog is about lesser-seen British films. There’s a few with exploitation elements but a wide array including kitchen-sink dramas, crime/genre films, etc. Hidden gem territory and highly curatorial.

Quote:
The BFI Flipside charts "the untold history of British film", and includes performances by such celebrated actors as John Hurt, Jane Asher, Ian McNeice, Richard O'Brien, Tom Bell, Peter Cook, Barry Evans, Denholm Elliott and Judy Geeson in films directed by the likes of Clive Donner, Richard Lester, Barney Platts-Mills, John Irvin, Stuart Cooper, Guy Hamilton, Peter Watkins and James Hill. Each BFI Flipside edition includes a feature film presentation that is complemented by additional film content (sometimes a second feature film by the same director, or a selection of short films which are related to the main feature by subject, era, actor or director). Each release is packaged in distinctive artwork which carries the volume number on the spine and with a comprehensive booklet containing informative essays, full cast and credit information, original film reviews and reproductions of original promotional material.

The Flipside is dedicated to releasing British film titles which have never been available on any home video format before (though some exceptions have been noted by the label's founder and programmer) and all films are newly mastered to High Definition from the best available film materials from the BFI National Archive or from the collections of filmmakers.

I’d suggest this list for anyone wanting to explore the Flipside catalog. It can be filtered by genres and sorted by rating/popularity, year, etc:

I can unreservedly recommend Deep End (1970), helmed by Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski. If I were to make a list of movies deserving to be better-known, this would be near the top.

I'm still amazed no one in the U.S. has released this yet. Criterion must be sitting on it.

I actually just ordered Gaslight & Sleepwalker (both BFI) from Rarewaves the other day... so the prices have been good at least a few days.

I grabbed Bertolucci's Before the Revolution from them the other day and it was $9.99, so I also lucked into this without knowing. Was wondering why it was so cheap!

This site often has great deals but things to remember is:
- most BFI BDs are region B
- shipping is regular mail with no tracking
- there is an ongoing UK postal strike
- there was a computer attack that stopped international delivery
- it usually takes a month to arrive (when no strike)

Yes, region B and I always give rarewaves three months to get to me. Wasn't aware of the UK computer attack.

3 months? The longest I had to wait was 6 weeks. Btw are you able to do screencaps? I could never find any for those Carry On titles.

Actually, I think one order did take 3 months. Doesn't bother me because I have a large unwatched pile. As long as I get them, I am happy.

I am not seeing reviews for these carry-on films. Especially the new 4 box set from Australia, not one review..

This was actually the first time I've ordered directly off their website. I've ordered from Rarewaves a handful of times on ebay, however a couple shipments were just lost and never arrived. That was probably 1-2 years ago though, so hopefully things have improved.

I order from Rarewaves frequently, and recently, and the last couple of shipments have come from a distribution center in NY. They're not coming directly from the UK anymore.

For example, I ordered several Blu-Rays back on 1/3. They got here today from "Mark 3 Delivery Service" out of NY via UPS Mail Innovations/USPS with tracking (which is slow to begin with, so this amount of time would be typical even for that method within the US).

I wonder if they are trying to bypass Royal Mail and shipping orders in bulk (who knows) from UK to the US, then using a 3rd party to deliver them onto everyone.

I really have no idea, but the shipping is still massively cheap -- $4.99 per order -- and the bottom line prices for UK imports is way under Amazon UK, which I don't even bother with now. As long as you don't mind waiting a couple of weeks they're well worth it IMO.

Were you ordering from ebay, amazon or the rarewaves site?

Think I've always gotten my orders within a month, 5 weeks at the most. Similar to Zavvi, they usually don't ship entire orders together, though unlike Zavvi, they often ship 2 items together.

Ordered 6 CDs, 3 of them small box sets, after Xmas. Received 5 within 3 weeks, but one single CD never came. Guess I'll give it another week or two, then I'll contact them.
