What is this tomato and why is it rotten? Doesn't sound appealing, frankly.

Love the movie, but there’s a ridiculous algorithm that would place this movie over the (obviously) better movies. If anything, that list is intentionally trying to draw more interest to that movie …or its contrarian, personal interests. LA Confidential is a Very Good movie that I’d recommend to anyone….but it also (IMO) shouldn’t sniff anyone’s Top Ten if you’re really evaluating “the best movies ever created”.

Lot of great movies there, some unexpected (The Sweet Hereafter). But Lawrence of Arabia at 173 has me like

Love the movie, but it doesn’t sniff a top 20 influential movies in my book.

It's ironic because James Ellroy has more recently come out and said he hates the movie

Great movie, but unfortunately it has Kevin Spacey in it, so I can't really watch it anymore.

One of the movie that made me a fan of (neo?) noir detective films (along with Chinatown, Blade Runner and Who framed Roger rabbit) and made me seek out later in my life classics like The Maltese falcon and The big sleep. I watched yesterday Murder, my sweet from 1944 and if it wasn't for my love for movies like L.A. confidential, I might have never seek those out. Also, while Spacey is clearly an awful person, he is so damn good in this. You can't deny how much talent he had.

Anyone else has read the book btw? My local library has it and i've been very curious about it.

This same list says Top Gun: Maverick is the seventh-greatest film of all time, so I wouldn't put much stock in its ranking methodology.

And at the time he said he loved it. He's all over the DVD/Blu singing its' praises.

Of course people's opinions can change but I suspect that part of his recent "hate" is his ongoing attempt to mount another production of the material at some point.

edit: And, of course, Ellroy comes across as one cranky/contrarian SOB. Both in interviews and in the general dyspeptic tone of his novels. Doesn't mean he isn't a great writer.

I don't think so. I think this particular spate of contrarianism is a reaction against people who keep coming up to him and going 'Oh my God, you wrote LA Confidential. That's one of the best movies ever made' but obviously don't actually read his work. I think he said in a recent conversation with Eddie Muller that the failed Black Dahlia adaptation actually sold him way more books than LA Confidential did.

But yeah, Ellroy is nothing if he's not a contrarian, he'll be the first to tell you himself. He went to a predominantly Jewish high school, so he became a Nazi. In the 60s when everyone was on peace and love and protesting the Vietnam War, he became a **** you right winger. Everyone loves Raymond Chandler so he says Dashiell Hammett and even James M Cain are way better. The list goes on

Lists are made so we can have fun arguments about the list, most of them mean nothing.

Citizen Kane is the greatest film ever made for a whole host of reasons, it’s not my favorite but for its time it was innovative in so many ways.

I personally like LA Confidential A LOT. Seen it at least 20 times and Citizen Kane less than five.

Meet The Beatles (essentially a compilation album from the early UK releases) is better to me than the last 30 years of Grammy Album of the Year winners.

Album of the Year means nothing, this list means nothing but it’s all for fun and gives who ever creates a list something to do and something to get paid for.

Greatest movie of all time is Mr. Smith Goes To Washington. My list is just as valid as the RT list.

This isnt written in stone.

Film is an ART. There is NO definitive #1.

This kinda narrative is questionable.

I for one am SHOCKED that Rotten Tomatoes, ever the bastion of top quality film journalism and completely legitimate scoring, would put out a junk best movies list for the sole purpose of getting clicks. Nothing in their history would have predicted this.

I would say to remove the real person/actor from your mind and moreso accept the "character" and it is genuinely a difficult one because imagine your dislike is all their roles after they did something you don't agree with and that it may have occurred after that specific role(s)

I'll take it over Shawshank or Jeanne Dielman.
