This movie is the directing debut of Bong Joon-ho, whose Parasite is now a Palme D'or winner and currently in general release.

This is quite a fascinating comedy of errors that shows what a remarkable talent Bong Joon-ho always had for genre-mixing and captivating stories that are quite unpredictable and unexpectedly moving.

Before you read any further, know that several unsavory things are done to dogs in this movie - but a disclaimer at the beginning of the film assures us that no animals were harmed while making it. So it's cool!

PS - moderators, the page for this movie showed no existing threads for this movie, so I hope it's not an error. Also, started this in Movies folder as there's currently no domestic blu-ray, but it is available on HD digital and DVD.

Emailed Magnolia about the prospects of a blu-ray of this. Guess they have no plans.
Could also mean the rights for a blu aren’t under them but I highly doubt that.

I just ordered the DVD a couple days ago. Looking forward to checking it out for the first time.

My local library has this on DVD. May just check out instead of spending money on it. Even Bong has disowned the film and says folks should not watch and to consider Memories of Murder his actual debut.

I haven't seen it in almost 20yrs. I remember back in the day it quickly became a bit of a fan favourite, but I was a bit ambivalent to it tbh. Need to watch it again, but Memories of Murder was just like "wow,he REALLY upped his game here" going from a kind of uneven comedy drama to this crime masterpiece in the span of like two years or so.

Definitely worth checking out because it's not a bad film at all, but yeah: Lower your expectations. Bong's career has been a bit of a rollercoaster imo when it comes to balancing the comedy and the drama. Some of his films go a little overboard with excessively wacky elements or grotesque caricatures kind of undermining the drama in places (Barking, Mother, Snowpiercer, Okja), whereas others manage this amazingly subtle, gradually tipping balancing act of starting out kinda wacky and comedic, but little by little the stakes start to rise and before you know it, you're completely ****ing gripped watching this utterly thrilling piece of dramatic filmmaking. Memories of Murder, The Host, and Parasite do this beautifully.

Really? Never knew that.
If anything I find Okja and Snowpiercer his weaker titles.
Bong works best when he’s doing things in Korean.

Been dying to rewatch this one recently. Very limited ways to get this one streaming.

Maybe now that Magnolia is a partner with Vinegar Syndrome they can get this film a nice, new release.
