‘Hunger Games’ Prequel Novel From Suzanne Collins Coming In 2020, Lionsgate In Talks For Movie

Today, Scholastic announced that it is publishing Suzanne Collins’ new Hunger Games prequel novel, currently untitled, which will hit shelves on May 19, 2020.

The novel will be set in the world of Panem 64 years before the events of the original Hunger Games trilogy on the morning of the reaping of the 10th Hunger Games — well before the lifetime of the story’s protagonists Katniss Everdeen, played by Jennifer Lawrence on-screen.

“As the proud home of the Hunger Games movies, we can hardly wait for Suzanne’s next book to be published. We’ve been communicating with her during the writing process and we look forward to continuing to work closely with her on the movie,” said Joe Drake, Chairman of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group about the potential plans for a movie.

Lionsgate adapted four movies from Collins trilogy, splitting the final Hunger Games: Mockingjay into two parts. All in, the movies made close to $3 billion at the worldwide box office and next to Twilight is one of Lionsgate’s platinum franchises at the studio. The Hunger Games books appeared on the New York Times bestseller list for more than 260 consecutive weeks (more than five consecutive years), and there are more than 100 million copies of all three books in the trilogy.

On returning to the world of The Hunger Games, Collins said, “With this book, I wanted to explore the state of nature, who we are, and what we perceive is required for our survival. The reconstruction period ten years after the war, commonly referred to as the Dark Days—as the country of Panem struggles back to its feet—provides fertile ground for characters to grapple with these questions and thereby define their views of humanity.”

Collins has been involved in the movies serving as an EP and a co-screenwriter on the first 2012 movie. Though she seemed finished with Hunger Games after the publication of Mockingjay in 2010, she teased a new series of books at the 2013 BookExpo publishing convention. Collins most recent novel was in 2013, Year of the Jungle, based on the time in Vietnam served by Collins’ father, a career Air Force officer.

Scholastic acquired world English rights to the prequel novel and it will publish in print, digital and audio formats in the US, Canada, the UK and Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand next year. The deal was negotiated by Rosemary Stimola of the Stimola Literary Studio for Suzanne Collins and David Levithan, VP, Publisher and Editorial Director, for Scholastic.

Collins said after the 4th film was released that she had plans to do a prequel series chronicling the rise of Panem. I'm in.

Oh please, don't give me that nonsense. It's been 9 years since Mockingjay, and she's only written a children's picture book. She clearly doesn't have any hot new ideas going for her, and wants to milk the only thing that's actually been successful for her.

J.K. Rowling is doing the same now, but at least she put out some quality books after Harry Potter, even if it's under a pseudonym.

Or, you know, Collins didn't feel a need to rush back into the world of Panem and took a much needed break after writing three books and helping oversee four movies set in that world?

Was Tolkien money hungry and out of ideas when, after seventeen years, he decided to write a sequel to The Hobbit that fleshed out the backstory of that funny magic ring Bilbo found?

Authors aren't machines that can just churn out book after book after book on demand. Some can, but that's not the same for everyone. For some authors, it takes them years to get an idea to the point where they feel like writing it.

The Hunger Games books still sell well and Collins still gets all her royalties from the movies, merchandise, theme park attractions etc based on the books so to say she's doing this purely for the money and because she has no ideas is silly. Much like Rowling, Collins could live comfortably for the rest of her life and have money to spare without writing another book. The fact both have returned to their universes isn't a matter of money, its that they have a story they want to tell. For some authors, writing is a job. For hugely successful authors like Rowling and Collins, it's a passion.

I liked the movie series. The 2nd film in particular, but I really have an aversion to these prequels where they go back and cover past events that are far more often than not, better left to the imagination.

As someone who hated that book, the films are MUCH better and more compelling. But Catching Fire remains the best film.

I'm all for this. A lot of fans have been wanting more, and prequels specifically, so there is no downside. Certainly not for Lionsgate, who need a big franchise comeback.

Personally, I've always wanted a prequel about the 50th Hunger Games. The double-sized one that Haymitch won. Could also show how Plutarch, a young gamemaker, seeing that level of carnage, begin to turn against the Capitol.

Thought Mockingjay pt1 was aces, yep. It's amazing that a movie as dark and depressing as that was ever considered to be tentpole blockbuster fodder.

I don't mind the idea of a prequel, anyways. Looking forward to it.

I didn't really mind the book that much. It certainly panned out differently than what I imagined, but the ending was satisfying, and conclusive enough. Certainly better than the third book for the Divergent series (Allegiant) which was truly a heaping pile of shit. I thought the first two in that series were pretty good.

The white knights are in full force today I see. Look, believe what you'd like about Collins, and her lack of any new novel in nearly a decade. Believe that she has the talent to write a new book any time she wants, and has simply decided not to. Believe that she is going back to the hot moneymaker franchise purely because she wants to expand on it. Believe whatever makes you feel better. It's all opinions, and mine is she has no new ideas.

Also please don't utter Tolkien's name in the same sentence as Collins again. The comparison is completely silly if you know anything about Tolkien, and the publication history of The Hobbit, and LotR.
