FIVE FILMS BY MASAAKI YUASA

Widely regarded as one of the most imaginative and influential filmmakers working in animation today, Masaaki Yuasa has been compared to pioneers such as Tex Avery and Max Fleischer. He is one of contemporary anime's most prolific auteurs and has lent his humor and dynamism to genres as diverse as psychedelic thrillers, transcendent rock-operas and sweetly subversive teen romances. This set includes Masaaki Yuasa's five celebrated feature films – Mind Game (2004), The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl (2017), Lu Over The Wall (2017), Ride Your Wave (2019), and INU-OH (2021) – along with a host of never-before-seen bonus features and an original book celebrating the work of this one-of-a-kind storyteller. I feel extremely fortunate that I will be receiving this set to review today as it turns out. I have to write it up in a Gift Guide (mini-review w/high points) of sorts for the site I write on, but I'll share my thoughts of the set for sure on here. I will take some pictures of the set as well.

Hopefully this will help some of you who might be on the fence.

Default Overview and unboxing of the set

Douglas Davidson from Elements of Madness has received the set and has published a quick overview going over what's included on the set, plus an unboxing video. Not a technical review as in assessing audiovisual quality, but more of a rundown of the set and its relative value over the individual releases.

Come to think of it, the mention of new commentary tracks for both Mind Game and Inu-Oh on their respective discs should indicate that it's not only The Night is Short, Walk On Girl's disc that's newly authored for this set, but possibly all of them.

Still working on the set. I've gotten through all of the movies though, but not the special features. However, I do want to point out that Mind Game and Inu-Oh discs' don't have what I call standard commentary tracks. Mindgame is Director's commentary on specific scenes (lasts for about 31 minutes). Meanwhile on the Inu-Oh disc, there is a similar extra called Scene Breakdown which last for about 24 minutes. So these aren't full commentaries like the one on Lu Over the Wall. I'll have more details eventually as I have to get through this set and the Evangelion 4k set by Thursday night (and still go to my actual Day job this week). In the meantime, I did want to share these 5 pictures of the set.

Thanks for clarifying. I see those commentaries you point out are also mentioned in the reviews of their respective individual releases on this website. If that's the case, then maybe the same discs as the individual releases will remain for this set, except for the aforementioned The Night is Short, Walk On Girl, given the newly-included English dub for it.

It's all right, take all the time you want to thoroughly check the set as needed. We thank you very much for the pictures.

I specifically checked Inu-Oh and Mind Game again last night for any sort of real commentary. There were none on both (checked audio options and everything), especially disappointing on the former considering the people advertised. Now, the set is still fantastic in my opinion, but this is to me a serious omission. If they just said commentary and somehow it's missing, we can chalk it up to a typo. But when they start naming people, someone messed up. That commentary most likely does exist and I have no idea why it got left off.

This is a genuinely gorgeous set, one of my favorites in a long time. GKIDS really put a lot of care into this one. Can't wait to dig into the films I haven't seen before!

Also - for anyone waiting for a better price, it's already under $67 on Amazon, barely a week after release.

It's a shame to learn there's no extra commentary, but I'm still tempted. I own most of these already so it's harder to pull the trigger on it knowing that.
