Even as he juggles an award season campaign for West Side Story and post-production on his semi-autobiographical pic The Fablemans, Steven Spielberg looks to be getting that future dance card in order as sources tell Deadline he is attached to direct a new original story centered on Frank Bullitt, the iconic character played by Steve McQueen in the 1968 thriller, Bullitt. Spielberg will also produce the pic along with Kristie Macosko Krieger with Josh Singer on board to pen the script. Sources do add that with no script and deals still being finalized, this would likely not be the next project he directs.

Sources were adamant this is not a remake of that film but a new original idea centered on the character.

Insiders say Spielberg had been toying with the idea to direct a film based on the character for some time and came close last year to making it his follow-up to West Side Story but had to negotiate with the McQueen estate for the rights to the character before he would attach as a director. With the negotiations taking longer then expected, Spielberg shifted his focus to directing The Fablemans, the film which is loosely based on the director’s childhood growing up in Arizona, and moved off of this film. Once filming wrapped on Fablemans, he circled back to the Frank Bullitt project and recently tapped Singer to pen the script. source

That would be awesome. And since Lewis is around 13 years older than McQueen was when Bullitt was released, it could be set in the late 70's or early 80's.

Bradley Cooper To Play Frank Bullitt

Steven Spielberg looks to have found his Frank Bullitt as sources tell Deadline Bradley Cooper has closed a deal to play the no-nonsense San Francisco cop in the new original Bullit story centered on the classic character famously played by Steven McQueen in the 1968 thriller, which is set up at Warner Bros. Cooper will also produce the pic along with Spielberg and his producing partner Kristie Macosko Krieger (marking their second collaboration after Maestro), with Josh Singer on board to pen the script. Steve McQueen’s son, Chad ,and granddaughter Molly McQueen will exec produce the new movie.

Producer Kristie Macosko Krieger:

I’m producing it. Steven [Spielberg] and Josh Singer, who is writing the script, they are working on the story. I hope we have a script soon as the writers’ strike put us behind a bit. But they are working on it – I couldn’t tell you if it's the next movie we are making as I don’t know at this point. I think that it will be a wildly entertaining film.

Spielberg coming back to action is very good news as far as I'm concerned. His knack for visual excitement is as strong as it's ever been (and arguably stronger) but the subject matter of his post-Munich dramas hasn't been of much interest to me.
