I've always gotten PlayStation consoles, but the Bethesda acquisition and the backwards compatibility have me considering going with Xbox this time around
![]() Those lucky enough to have one, do you like it? Can you really play any old Xbox game with it? And how's the Blu-Ray side of things? |

I only have The series S so far.... I've enjoyed it so far.
I have a PS5 also. I like having both to be honest. I know that the series S isn't as good as series X, but it's enough to allow me to have the Xbox exclusives even though I prefer Playstation 5. My observations and ratings. Xbox S: Graphics: B+ Controller: B Load time: A+ Presentation: B+ Games: B Storage: D Gamepass/Xbox live: A PS 5: Graphics: A Controller: A Load time: B+ Presentation: A Games: B+ Storage: C PlayStation Plus: C- Obviously PS5 is better than Series S in graphics and storage. I don't have playstation now, but it appears to be inferior to what Xbox has to offer. Xbox has the advantage as far as online service goes. I also love how quickly the series S loads up. It is impressive. I am disappointed that Xboxes control doesn't seem to have progressed much since the 360. It isn't a bad remote by any means, but it feels slightly samey. I find that I like the PS core games better right now unless Xbox can deliver on their Perfect Dark reboot and bring some new Splinter Cell games. |

I had a heck of a time getting my PS5 last May. I stressed myself out trying to get one. I didn't want to go through that with the series X this year and so I went with the Series S. It just sucks that people are having a hard time getting what they want. It's unbelievable that people are still having as hard of a time as I did last year.

I am very happy with my Xbox X. I had stopped playing videogames, or at least buying consoles, after the Super Nintendo. When I got back into them, I went with the Xbox 360 for a couple of reasons and one of them that hasn't changed is the controller. I prefer it over the PS controller for its smoothness in my hands and my brain just connects better with buttons having letter names instead of geometric shapes.
As far as games go, it depends what you're into. I'm on GamePass and haven't bought many games since signing up for it because it meets most of my gaming needs. PS definitely ruled those big state of the art event titles last gen with stuff like 'God of War' and 'Last of Us'. I think the Bethesda purchase is part of Xbox's strategy to gain on that front, but we haven't really seen the fruit yet. Also, Xbox is rebuilding its relations with Japanese studios. It's great to see a lot of Sega's arcade type titles and 'Yakuza' games come to Xbox. But if you really love Japanese content, Xbox is still the weaker option. As for backwards compatibility, you play almost all old games. I think there are a few that don't work, but the odds are it will. I don't know about old hardware. I can't plug my old Guitar Hero game into the ports. The blu ray side of things has been fine, but I usually watch movies on my dedicated player and not my Xbox. |

You can always go the Xbox all access route, you're guaranteed of getting a console, but they make you buy a 24 month game pass subscription. Plus you have to finance it through Citizens pay at 34.99 a month, but with 0% interest, a total of $839 plus taxes.

I know it's tough, but I think you'll get one if you can keep track of the ones that do the stock updates. I got lucky and got mine a few days before my birthday. |

If you mainly play discs, you're better off using a real Ultra HD Blu-ray player.

With the upcoming release of Hellblade 2 and the Xbox leaks showing their future is digital only, I'm very much leaning towards getting a series X new/used. I've never had an xbox and want access to any exclusives old and new, especially on disc, but aside from Hellblade 2 I haven't seen any exclusives that aren't also on PS/PC. I'm also a PS player most of all.
Would y'all recommend a series X sooner rather than later? How much do you think they should go for used? I also already have an xbox controller so I don't need another one. |

There might be a PS5 Pro later this year, but the only new Xboxes in the pipeline are a digital-only Series X and a more efficient (aka cheaper to manufacture) Series S. I'd recommend grabbing a Series X sooner rather than later, since there's a lot more you can do with a disc drive than without, like movies, used games, and certain 360/OG Xbox titles that aren't available digitally.

Yeah I will never buy a digital only Xbox/console and the backwards compatible disc drive is a major selling point for me. I considered getting the Series S for super cheap when I was better off financially but I also want as much power as possible and prioritize quality and perf over price at that point.

Series X is a great console. I've probably used it as much or more than my PS5 as I love Gamepass and prefer my Xbox Elite 2 controller to the Dual Sense Edge. VRR support is also more robust if you have a TV that supports it as the console has system wide 120hz support and can do low frame rate compensation and help with frame drops down into the 20s (again if TV has VRR and supports that range) while the PS5's VRR only works in the 48fps or above range and won't help with drops below that.
Games are just personal choice and whether there's enough exclusives to buy if one already has a PS5 etc. Gamepass is great for me as I don't care about owning media these days as I almost never replay games, rewatch movies etc. But I know streaming/renting isn't as much a selling point here since this is of course a site of movie disc enthusiasts. I doubt there's any upgrade on the Series X coming ala the PS5 Pro as there's only been rumors of a discless version of the Series X and have said they are full speed ahead on developing their next gen console that they said would be the biggest generational leap ever (will believe that when I see it--unless they essentially make it a TV and price it significantly higher than consoles usually launch). So I wouldn't wait for that reason. Just waiting for a deal maybe as the Series X has been on sale for $400 or a bit less a few times (in the US at least). For me I'm leaning toward just sticking with my Xbox Series X and PS5 this gen and not getting a PS5 Pro and likely just buying or building a good gaming PC next go around. All Xbox exclusives already launch there of course and Sony is not porting most things after a couple of years with their leadership stating they want to increase frequency of PC ports etc. I'd rather just have all my games in one place, PC gaming on my TV is easy as my old gaming PC is still hooked up to my TV so all I'd need to do is replace that HDMI cable with an HDMI 2.1 capable one if I got a new gaming setup. |
