Holy shit this movie is freakin scary AF damn this is one for the books it will be the new Insidious and Conjuring of Horror that reinvents it. I am seeing this again wow what a movie and really looking forward to getting this on 4K Blu-Ray. The extras looks nice too. Everyone that likes horror movies should definitely watch this movie in the theaters.. Its a creepy one

Just got back and other than a nice 20 minute nap I pretty much couldn't wait til it was over. A couple of creepy moments but the acting is pretty bad and I gotta say the ex-wife's smile was creepier!

Movie was good, but unlike The Ring and It Follows of the same "curse" genre I'm trying to think if I can rewatch it very much with as good of overall impact (The Ring is my favorite horror movie).

I'll probably end up getting it.

I saw this the other day and it didn't live up to the hype for me.

[Show spoiler]The Ring Follows. They seriously just lifted a few elements straight from It Follows. It appears to you as loved ones? The tall man coming through the doorway? For real? And almost every 'scare' was a jump scare, nothing lingered or felt insidious. There were a few moments of figures in the darkness that didn't go BOO which I really appreciated, but they were heavily outweighed by jump scares. I also enjoyed the face tearing off scenes, but it happened twice and they were both just dreams/delusions/not real.

One thing I really didn't like, was how the Smile element didn't serve any real plot purpose and felt too much like a marketing decision. Like 'what normal thing can we make scary to market the movie? Oh how about we make smiling insidious? But in the film there's no reason the Being needed to smile, and it existed in the film just because 'wow smiles creepy!'. It felt really shallow. The whole movie felt like a bit of trash that got a glow-up in the editing suite to feel like a prestige horror, but it just wasn't.
I reckon it wouldn't stand up to subsequent viewings and would be rather dull.

[Show spoiler]I agree with a lot of what you said before (though I still liked the movie), but the biggest thematic element flew way, way over your head if you think smiling was a gimmick in this movie. The smiling was indeed a gimmick in Truth or Dare, but this was just as relevant as rings/loops/circles are in The Ring (again, my favorite horror film).

There were several key scenes that spelled this out, including the idea that an apparent friendly gesture can take on sinister/creepy undertones.

I don't think I agree it's as relevant as rings & loops are in the Ring. In smile, the idea is that trauma begets trauma (and the only way out is suicide or murder, eg enacting your trauma onto others (horrible, irresponsible message)). But Smiling has no significance to this and the overall theme re: trauma. Unless I really did just miss something?

Let's start with the entity (I don't know if it has a name).

The smile is meant to cause unease. It clearly did for Rose (trying to think if her name has meaning regarding the flower, and maybe a nod to Emily Rose), Laura, Gabriel, Robert (the inmate), likely every other victim, and the audience. It played off as sinister and unfriendly, and it weakened the characters throughout their week after witnessing a suicide. The entity knows that it can cripple their mental state, and it relishes in this. Then after that 4-7 days, it seeks an inviting mind (who for all intents and purposes have their lives seemingly in order at that point) that can witness their suiciding of another helpless victim, and starts the process over again.

Now, to be fair, a lot of the smiling concept is symbolic for the audience, not necessarily the characters themselves. In other words, it's not something that two characters would have a conversation about regarding motifs behind the smile, much like they wouldn't say "Well Rose is a nod to Emily Rose (maybe)." But the big thing here is that smiling is a gesture that people put on to express happiness, though it can also be a mask to put on the appearance of happiness where behind is nothing but melancholy and dread. Think of the monologue that John Blake has to Bruce Wayne in The Dark Knight Rises. It's a very similar idea, if not identical. You saw the chart in the ER, right? Apparently, smiling equals no pain. Rose looked at that long and hard and basically said "**** you" to that without actually saying that.

There is a very particular scene before her nephew's birthday party where Rose is putting on makeup and practicing smiling in front of a mirror, but in a very fake way as she is only putting on the gesture as opposed to expressing pleasure toward anything. Then near the end of the movie Rose reveals to Joel why she had left him, stating that she had lived her life with a wall that she thought she could use to guard herself at any time for any person, and the more she was with him the more she saw that guard lower. Her guard continued to lower throughout this movie and her attempts to conceal herself behind a mask (such as a smile) waned through most of the film, pretty much right after Laura's suicide. Other characters noted throughout that she wasn't ever the same person she had been, such as her sister, Trevor, and her superior (maybe even her psychiatrist, but I can't remember).

The worse it got, the more she became more distanced from those who could provide her this emotional support. She clearly had strong relationships with all of them as well as her cat (named Mustache, yet another guard that can conceal true facial emotion), and like Joey one time before there was more distance caused because she couldn't smile anymore. Smiling was her wall, and it was taken down. I'm sure I could throw more symbolism regarding the mother as well, since she was never shown to smile herself (until the entity's presence took over) and her overdose was clearly a catalyst for Rose to grow up to who she became to be, but I'll let others dissect that.

Now, I didn't see any trailers before this movie and didn't know what the concept was. I thought it was going to be that if you saw a photograph of somebody cursed with a certain wry smile, you'd have seven days to live, blah blah blah. Maybe if the whole narrative was the same that that person had just committed suicide before taking a photo with said smile, that could've somehow found its footing and made a commentary about the illusory of our photos (specifically on social media) are always depicting us at our best or during our best times but do not show our darker moments or our mundane everyday routines. They could have definitely gone that route, but what they did also worked as the entity was all about grinning deep into their next subject, saying: "I'm about to turn your pretty little world upside-down" (oh yeah, remember all those upside-down shots?).

I'm fully aware there is no doubt that as writer/director Parker Finn came up with this idea, he wanted to throw in something that could naturally leave us unsettled, and smiling was exactly that. All horror movies have their thing, with The Ring having Samara's hair in front of her, The Grudge with the croaking sound, Saw with the Billie puppet, I mean the list goes on. This seems to have a lot of thematic meaning interwoven throughout the story and Rose's character though, and they spared very little in expressing exactly that. To ignore/miss all of it and coin the smile as nothing but a "gimmick" though seems like it needed to be called out, though.

I appreciate the thoughtful response, but I'm still really not convinced about it. Most of this once again boils down to

[Show spoiler]smiling usually means happy and it's spooky when it's sinister! I'm being reductive, sure, but only because it still feels overwhelmingly like marketing to me rather than something creative and inventive. Inverting the meaning of a smile just doesn't carry a film for me. It's heavy handed and not all that interesting.

The only thing that I do think could work, which you mentioned, is how people affect happiness to mask their pain, and those of us in the deepest depressions can often appear the happiest. But I don't think it's enough to justify the smiling and I don't believe, thematically, it intended for this. This could be said for the people who become possessed and smile right before they die or enact violence, but all the visages of smiling she sees leading up to that point that are just meant to be scary kind of muddies that idea. It was about grief and trauma for sure, but the smiling didn't connect to those themes at all for me.

You could have made the exact same movie, called it The Entity or something, and removed the smiling, and 99% of the movie would be completely identical, save for the Smile shots that make for good trailer fodder.
