SPACE
TIME The slipcover is the enemy of both, occupying space on shelves and taking your time removing them and putting them back. A proper release has no slipcover. A proper release has a scanavo case with a reversible sleeve. |

I have never liked that they have the same art as the real cover inside. Nonetheless whenever I've seen my dad chunking them in the trash as soon as he opens a movie I tell him don't do that! it ruins the resale value!

There are pros and cons
Pros: they protect against scuffing and clouding of the plastic overlay. They protect against moisture and Temperatures that warp and wrinkle the plastic overlay and paper inserts (mostly occurs when collection is housed on outer wall, to near a window, air conditioning unit, drafty door, or basement) Slips can offer new different art work than the slip, often possess better picture quality can differ from the inner insert, sometimes metal, mirror, matte, or gloss effects are applied to look extra attractive. Slips look sharper and more square offering a collection that looks better. Slipped films sell for more, slips without films that are rare go anywhere from $3.00/20.00 a piece with the odd slip like Moon or The Good Bad and The Ugly going for $70/80.00 a piece. cons: Impatient people hate the extra step of having to remove them. They take up approximately 1 inch of shelf width space every 32 slipped films that otherwise would have stored 2 extra unslipped films. Thats about 3 extra films per shelf on a 4 foot shelf, so like 15 extra films on a 5 shelf unit. Slips can cause damage to the clear overlay when a film is slid into a slip haphazardly catching on the barcode cutout window. Last edited by Phillip c. Niethe; 02-11-2024 at 12:27 PM. |

Slips are kind of interesting in the regard that I never really paid attention to them before reading this forum. I'm sure I've had a decent number of them on dvds over the years and probably a few hd era slips before reading comments about them online. But it was never something I'd think of attempting to collect. The novelty of slips has considerably dwindled in most cases, but it's one of those things where at the same price I'd of course prefer to have one than not. It's not like say a decade or so ago when there were way more media stores still around and I'd generally get pickier and maybe pass on stuff in stores just to wait for a copy with a slip. I guess now days I'd be more interested in them from specific companies like Vinegar Syndrome, Shout, etc. And perhaps uhds in general since it's perhaps the last physical media product in evolution. Sometimes the addition of a slip can increase the likelihood of an impulse buy, though, and I definitely bought blus over the years during BF that I may not have if the copies did not have a slip. And if a uhd is competitively priced with a slip, then that could influence a purchase in some cases in instances where I might be otherwise less inclined to buy.

You want to save on space? Switch to digital.
You want to save on time? It's probably quicker to pull up a hard drive or streaming service than it is to insert/load a disc. You want to enjoy physical products with nice packaging? You get slipcovers. Your discs will spend the majority of the time sitting on a shelf - they might as well look good doing it. |
