Quote:
For nearly five years, acclaimed German filmmaker Werner Herzog desperately tried to complete one of the most ambitious and difficult films of his career, Fitzcarraldo, the story of one man’s attempt to build an opera house deep in the Amazon jungle. Documentary filmmaker Les Blank captured the unfolding of this production, made more perilous by Herzog’s determination to shoot the most daunting scenes without models or special effects, including a sequence requiring hundreds of indigenous Peruvians to pull a full-size, 320-ton steamship over a small mountain. The result is an extraordinary document of the filmmaking process and a unique look into the single-minded mission of one of cinema’s most fearless directors.

I'm hoping BFI releases a 4K for FITZCARRALDO down the road to compliment this great documentary.

Really Criterion?

How about releasing Werner Herzog's films in 4K?!
Fitzcarraldo, Cobra Verde, Heart of Glass, Woyzeck, The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser and many more need 4K releases!

Yeah it is kinda funny to me that this is getting a UHD before Fitzcarraldo.

Will definitely be picking this up though, the making of Fitzcarraldo is absolutely bonkers.

Also features one of my fav quotes from Herzog:

"Taking a close look at what is around us, there is some sort of a harmony. It is the harmony of overwhelming and collective murder. And we in comparison to the articulate vileness and baseness and obscenity of all this jungle, we in comparison to that enormous articulation, we only sound and look like badly pronounced and half-finished sentences out of a stupid suburban novel, a cheap novel. And we have to become humble in front of this overwhelming misery and overwhelming fornication, overwhelming growth, and overwhelming lack of order. Even the stars up here in the sky look like a mess. There is no harmony in the universe. We have to get acquainted to this idea that there is no harmony as we have conceived it. But when I say this all full of admiration for the jungle. It is not that I hate it, I love it, I love it very much, but I love it against my better judgment."

Great quote, but you missed my favorite part of it: "The birds are in misery. I don’t think they sing, they just screech in pain…”

I've read that Herzog wanted to license the rights to all his films all at once to one label and have them put out a big box set using the existing transfers he'd signed off on. Janus/Criterion didn't want to do that, but Shout (and BFI) were willing to.

I just picked up the DVD from the July sale! Figured it was never on Blu-ray and surely it won't get an upgrade. Thankfully, I still have a few days left on the return window.

Interesting that they've recycled this very DVD-era cover.

"Of course, we are challenging nature itself, and it hits back, it just hits back, that's all, and that's grandiose about it and we have to... to accept that it's much stronger than we are. Kinsky always says it's full of erotic elements. I don't see it so much erotic, I see it more full of obscenity. It's just... and nature here is violent, base, I wouldn't see anything erotical here. I would see fornication, and asphyixiation and choking and fighting for survival and growing and... just rotting away. Of course, there's a lot of misery. But it is the same misery that is all around us. The trees here are in misery and... the birds are in misery. I don't think they, they sing, they just screech in pain."

Why don't you aquire them yourself? Have you ever thought about it? You could restore them and release them on 4K discs for everybody to see. That would be great! You are going to do it, yes? I am counting on you!
