I know they are different studios. It is just interesting that Warner is dragging their feet on releasing the films of perhaps its most successful video star from the golden age of film.

i want to watch this, the only turn-off for me is Liza Minelli. never a big fan. i am a HUGE de niro fan, which supersedes everything (except maybe marlon brando). is it a good movie if I like De Niro? also, do you have a link?

New York, New York was just okay. Truth be told, I thought De Niro was outdone by Liza Minelli's performance. Im not suggesting De Niro was terrible because he wasn't but I felt his character was too unlikable.

Since they use the same cover as the North American 2-disc, I hope they include all of the extras from it as well. That DVD set wasn't the easiest to find in stores, & the featurettes (lacking from the 1st 1-disc release), were available overseas long before they were here.

I'm VERY anxious to read what the pundits have to say about this release. I will say it looks to be the same exact source used for the last DVD transfer and by that I mean not the camera negative. There are MANY opticals in this film, and that, combined with the awful film stock used for duping creates a transfer that replicates what the prints looked like, i.e. with opticals with popcorn-sized yellow grain. Had they gone back to the negative and done a fresh transfer it could have looked much better, but for those who think overt grain is what the filmmakers wanted, they should love this transfer. Of course, since Mr. Scorsese and company were trying to replicate the look of the MGM musicals, that really isn't what they wanted, but something they had to accept with the release prints.
As to the film, it remains the perfect example of many things: Style over substance, the problem with letting and encouraging actors to improvise scenes rather than having actual good writing on the page (this film has some of the most excruciatingly bad improvised scenes in the history of film and they literally just go on and on and drown themselves in a pool of self-indulgence), a leading character that is a jerk from the first frame to the last, and the character opposite him with whom the audience simply cannot identify or care about because SHE'S a jerk for staying with the JERK for even a second. It's a problem. But the set design, the songs, the band, the photography (at least in first generation) is wonderful. But stick that stuff in a bloated 160-plus minute elephant and you get the reaction this film got on its initial release - critical brickbats and audience apathy. People seem to forget how lambasted this film was and they also seem to forget that it was a complete box-office disaster - it's now spoken of like it's some sort of classic, to which I can only say it must be nice to live in Fantasyland. |

Does someone own the US Blu-ray of New York, New York?
If yes, can you please check the audio tracks on it. I need to know, whether German is on the disc. MGM doesn't state all languages on the cover. |

Added the back cover that was posted at DVDEmpire.com and it looks like we only have English, Spanish, and french audio and the same for subtitles.

What's with all the 1.66:1 aspect ratios on MGM blurays lately? These are all American films, wouldn't they have been framed for 1.85:1 or am I mistaken?
Also, looking at the screenshots it looks "dupier" than I would imagine even an average release print would have looked. A bit dissapointing but at least they didn't put the zap on it with the digital scrubber. I'll still pick this up when it hits 10 bucks or so. Last edited by Strevlac; 06-29-2011 at 03:04 AM. |
