Sony Pictures 28 Years Later 3

It is confirmed

Danny Boyle to Direct Third ‘28 Years Later' Movie

Quote:
Boyle is telling Empire that he’s going to be directing the trilogy capper, but that it won’t be shot “until audiences respond to the first film.” Judging by the record-breaking reaction to the trailer, I don’t believe Boyle/Garland will have much of a problem completing their trilogy.

Ugh. I hate trilogies that formatted this way. Director A, then Director B come sin, changes it up, only for Director A to come back.
Either have the same director for consistency are change it up for each film.

I would have thought most fans would prefer to have Boyle back for the trilogy capper

Depends on what these films are doing. Cause the middle chapter could destroy what the first is trying to do.

Happened with the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

I'm just going to be very cautiously optimistic and hope that Danny and Nia will work together much more harmoniously than JJ and Rian did

I would certainly prefer Garland helmed all three, but at the minimum, we can rest a bit easier knowing that there's only one credited screenwriter, Garland, for the whole trilogy.

The Star Wars sequel trilogy had far more cooks in the kitchen.

* The Force Awakens: Lawrence Kasdan, J. J. Abrams, & Michael Arndt
* The Last Jedi: Rian Johnson
* The Rise of Skywalker: Chris Terrio & J.J. Abrams (screenplay & story); Derek Connolly, Colin Trevorrow (story).

7 separate individuals, and that's just who was officially credited.

Garland has sway and is actively involved, so it's not a half-assed effort.

At least Garland and Boyle have worked closely with the original movies.

The Star Wars shit was Disney just going for big names who never worked with it previously to make a splash and it was all incoherent mess.

I have way more faith with this.

If they have everything planned out, that's fine. I guess this is more for stock traders if this is a public company or something, as what good is telling audiences that this is going to be a trilogy?

I think that is supposed to increase the value of the films as a longer story stretched out over 3 films instead of one?

I prefer the days when studios would just try to see how one film did before announcing any trilogy. What about a dual film saga. 2 instead of 3? Are those not trending well? I'm waiting for a 4 or 5 film saga to be announced for other franchises.

That aside, I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with the 3rd film (not the trilogy till I see the 3rd one and if I like it enough to see the 4th, or 5th).

Interesting. I wonder why he didn't just direct the 2nd film himself.

That's easy - he is presumably still doing post on the 1st one, there was no way he could also direct the 2nd one at the same time and have it ready by January of next year.

Nia is possibly even more hated by Rian by people on the internet, so I believe this'll be a massive crapstorm.

Alex Garland wrote all three movies, so I think they'll be consistent enough
totally hoped he would direct one, though, he's also a great director

I thought Garland said he didn’t plan to direct another movie

I doubt the second movie sticks to that January release date. If the first movie is a big hit then they are going to move it to the summer just like Boyle's film.

I think Boyle could have filmed both easily. Movies have been filmed back to back by the same directors before. Peter Jackson did a trilogy in two years. Twice. If it sticks to the January date, after the first movie is released, Boyle would have 9 months to finish post production on the second movie.

I'm thinking Boyle was probably only to direct the first one and probably have the 2nd and 3rd films directed by different people. Maybe the director for the 3rd backed out of the film or they couldn't make a deal so now Boyle has to step back in for the finale...

Maybe he didn't want to get burned out from making three of them, taking a small break between shoots, while ensuring the trilogy stays its course makes sense. As for moving it, 2026 is ridiculously stacked in terms of movies with big box office potential, arguably the biggest year since the pandemic, it would get buried if they put it in the summer.

January is a great month for horror, a well received one can clean house with little competition (see M3GAN).

New listing on Production Weekly, updated today, lists the start date as March 31st 2025.

Maybe they decided to fast-track the movie?

I liked Walking Dead up to a certain point and then lost interest, but I hope this stays in the style of the first 28 movies and not trying to become too drama themed like Walking Dead with the zombies as an afterthought most times. That series was mostly about humans vs humans, and zombies appearing sometimes in each episode.

I don't mind story, but would be cool if there was constant pressure to keep moving with very little downtime for relaxing in these 3 new 28 movies.
